I think that era of hunting/varmit rifles are visually pleasing.View attachment 877161View attachment 877162
Heres a couple pictures of my new rifle. Mr. Lombardi was kind enough to give it to me. Said he knows it's going to someone who'll appreciate it and that's what matters to him.
You might check the rifling twist. It could be a 10 twist and not suited for heavier bullets. 4320 is indicative of lighter bullets. Here's an issue though. Mr. Lombardi used 4320 powder in it and that powder is no longer available. Can anyone recommend a suitable substitute?
I've got a 257 AI the needs fitted to it's stock from that era. It's got a tiger maple stock. They had a lot of slick guns back then.I think that era of hunting/varmit rifles are visually pleasing.
Yeah win magMan, that's awesome.
Any more info on the cartridge? What's it based on? You said 338, is it a 338 WM?
My buddy who helped broker the deal said Mr. Lombardi also had some 7 rem mag cases too and he thought if I ran them through the forming die they'd work. Will have to seeMan, that's awesome.

That sounds painfulI have an 8mm/338 wildcat. 1942 Mauser K98 kicks like a mule.
Pretty sure he used 70 grainsFor the load development, starting with 7mm mag data should be fine. If you have a spent case, measure the h2o volume with that or if you know the load data for the 4320, post that and you can get some input on comparisons.
And looking at my Sierra book from the 1970s I must have misheard what he said. 57 I think is max for 4320 and a 140 grain bullet. There's data all the way to 175 thoughPretty sure he used 70 grains
That was actually another guys pickup. Harold Tweedle. He was a taxidermist and a darn good one as long as you got your mount back...Congrats OP on the rifle, he wouldnt still have the truck too would he lol? I love the older guns, keep it, shoot it, and hunt with it for the old hunter. That is just awesome.
Hope to get some loads made up and shot over the weekend. Only 3 months till Doe season!Nice!
