if I wanted a 600 yard rifle for elk, is a 16 inch barrel too short ? I’m interested in cutting down my barrel from 22 inches and am currently running a banish backcountry can. I want to cut once and be done with it and not regret going not going shorter to start with.

You'd be at about 2800 ish with 16 inch with Federal from what I've chronographed

Any idea what energy retention would be ? I don’t hand load, and don’t have the bandwidth to hand load rn. I currently shoot factory hornady. But am interested in getting hand loads from choice, Pendleton, or copper creek.

At 600? Plenty... 2800 muzzle with the 175 eld-x will get you ~2K FPS and ~1700ish Ft. Lbs at 600 yards. That bullet will take you quite a bit further - using 1800 FPS for ELD-X expansion will get you 850+

Should be over 2400 fps an 2200 ftlb according to hornadys app if you getting 2800 at muzzle. Look on previous page I got velocity for federal with 18 inch barrel

That seems a bit quick... Running it through shooter at my elevation (3000) with tested and verified speeds and I don't even see 2400 at 600 yards with a muzzle of 2975...

Agreed, yeah app defaulted to Hornadys presets. Cause I was back an forth of what I wanted for a short barreled magnum. Knew if I got 2800 I'd be good. Now dealing with the clicker issue

I am currently running a 22” barrel. Off the shelf Bergara. Handloads, 175 Berger over H1K sitting at 2850 fps. They are not close to hot at all. Odds are I will put a proof barrel on this summer. But will be going 20”. And if I can adjust my load and stay in the same speed range I’ll be happy. Puts the 1800 mark about 950 yards.

I’ve got a 16” 7PRC. It’s a 16” Bartlein. Federal Premium w/ 175gr ELD-X is @ 2680fps suppressed. Shoots ~2/3 MOA for me at both 100 and 500. The range I’m at painted their steel black and I was using holdovers, so likely will shoot a little better if I dial and have a fixed point of aim. ES was 10 for 3 shots…small sample size but I only had 1 box. Barrel has 18 rounds down it so I anticipate it’ll probably speed up 20-50fps. Shoots well enough I ordered 500 rounds.
