7mm-08 short barrel recommendations

Not trying to derail anything here, but it’s related to the topic. If I wanted to run the 162 ELD-M at 2800 MV out of an 18-20” barrel, I don’t think even a long throat 708 could get me there. Would it take a 284 Win or 280 AI?

A .284 might get you there. I dont think a 7mm-08 AI will. I'm sure someone with one of the aforementioned rounds will chime in and tell you what will do it. Pretty sure a 7saum or wsm will. Of course, you will need a mag bolt face.

I got a 21" 284 Win and this is H4350 and Staball 6.5 with 162gr ELD-M

The vanilla 7-08 won’t get there. You might get to 2650-2675 with a 20” and some loads running hot.

My 20” 7-08 Ackley will get ~2730 with the 162 if I really lean on it. Shot really well there, but I don’t really have any need to beat on brass, so I run it 2675 or so.

Ive got just over 2600 with my Model Seven 7mm-08, but brass life wasn't great. It was older R-P brass.
I used 47.0gr of R-19 with a 160gr Partition. Shot pretty well so I carried it bear hunting one year. No bear were harmed in the process!

I run a 7mm-08 SAW (West Texas Ordnance) which is a 308 Palma SRP case necked down to 7mm. It is a Zermatt Origin action with a 20” Bartlein barrel. I shoot 162 ELDX over Varget powder and get 2750 fps.

I can get 2800 with 162 in my 20" 7-08AI, however there is a very large caveat. My chamber was cut with more freebore, and a longer leade so as to seat them way out and is +P. I am still probably above 62500psi with that load, but with Lapua brass, my primer pockets are fine and no other pressure signs.
If you go with a "standard" chamber, I would expect that you would end up somewhere in the 2725-2760 range at the top end.

I am in the process of trying to get even higher with the 162s using .277 Fury brass. I have had to take a bit of a hiatus from that experiment due to things getting super crazy at work, but I am hoping I will have some time around the holidays to play a bit more. According to GRT I should be able to hit 2875 before getting to 80K on the brass.
