if you had 7 pts in wy what unit would you hunt and why?
or what unit would you shoot for as a second choice to keep points?

I don't think there is any way you can draw a bull tag as a second choice in WY. The demand has gotten too high.
You should be able to get a good tag with 7 points, however.

I have 8 points and I've decided to try and use em in WY next year...I'm considering this the last elk hunt on which a pile of points will be used. It would be nice to get a giant bull and it'll take some work and luck...for sure.

Sorry...made that all about me. However I'm in the same boat...got points...not totally sure where to apply.
I would/will look for units that have public access available...doesn't take a ton of public land, a hundred or so thousand acres should do it. There will need to be access to the land that's accessible...not just roads in but there will have to be a way that I can pack a bull out...by myself. If it seems like I could get into trouble shooting a bull many miles in I will need to "access" a packer. These are just a few things that I'm kicking around. Feel free to PM me and we can bounce thoughts off'n each other.

This. If I had 7 points I'd be cautious about putting general tag as second choice - there is a significant difference in quality of bulls between general areas and special draw areas. Lots of general areas where you can give yourself a good chance at a 250-290 bull, maybe get very fortunate and locate one around 300", but the state seems to do an awfully good job managing many of the special draw areas for real trophies. I'd hate to give up 7 points on a general area.

I'm dumping 7 points on a general tag this year as I haven't been able to get a second choice general tag and my local WY friends are putting down bulls over 340 in a general area every season. They have a great area that is very hard to get to so not the norm.

would you actually be giving up 7 points if it was your second choice? i thought you still keep them if no 1st choice

Fine. I'll spend my 8 on general and go with you...

Your friends are putting down 340+ bulls EVERY YEAR in a general unit? They must be doing something amazingly right, especially if they can afford to invite extra guys along!

They scout all summer and start hunting in Sept and don't stop until into October or tags are filled. They pass on many bulls to get it done. They are elk killers. Extra guy, just me. I turned them on to hunting when I lived in the area and like I said, they're good buddies. I dont want to burn my points but when I'm seeing big bulls on the ground in a general unit that I'd be hard pressed to kill in a LE unit, they're burning this year. Not boasting in any way, my jaw drops every time they send pics.

It's amazing that so many guys, myself included, build points for years and years and think they can go kill a giant bull because the tag was hard to draw. By contrast dudes that scout, immerse themselves and dedicate the time to a general unit/area can shoot OIL animals on a very consistent basis.

There are alot of big bulls in general areas in Wyoming. My buddy is an outfitter and he killed some monsters the last couple years. I saw 2 bulls within a mile of each other this year over 320. One was well over

I drew a decent-to-good unit last year & didn't see an animal!
With zero points left, I'm putting in for the same unit (not a chance) & a General for second choice (chance in a thousand) I'll be over the moon with either!

I think you guys are putting in for the wrong areas. I can't seem to ever draw a limited entry tag (14 years and never drawn) and I have hunted with friends numerous areas and have seen some big bulls. With that said I have seen big bulls in general areas as well. If you put your time in and immerse yourself like others mentioned than yes you can kill giants every year. I don't have time so I don't get too.

As a non resident, the OP has 0% chance of getting the General Tag as a second choice in WY, if I am reading the 2016 draw odds correctly. In every non resident draw, there is more 1st choice applicants than the number of available tags, even in the Special Draw.

I think there is some misperception on what limited draw areas are intended for. Wyo. G&F issues limited tags in areas to manage the herd numbers. Generally, limited draw does not equate to managing for trophy bulls. There are a few exceptions, but the primary reason for limited draw is to control numbers of hunters and harvest rates.
