Congrats to all of those that drew their WY elk tags! Let the questions about honey holes begin! My party got lucky so now we start the real planning. I'm hoping to get input on 3 campgrounds in WY unit 51. If anybody has camped at Beartooth Lake, Island Lake or Long Lake campgrounds, would you mind sharing your firsthand opinions? We will be staying in our wall tents and will likely hunt the first couple weeks of the season. Thank you!

Sorry I don't know anything about the campgrounds you mentioned. Just had a thought that may help. You should be able to put your wall tent up pretty much anywhere on public ground where you can pull off the main road. if you don't need the public outhouse camping should be available.

As stated above, why not just pick a nice flat spot and set up camp? Most good spots can be found by looking at topo maps online. Finding a camping spot is a much easier job than finding Elk!

There aren’t a lot of roads and I see some houses and a ranch, so there’s definitely a need to have a good idea of what’s public land and what isn’t.

If you decide to camp off the road it’s possible to zoom in close enough to see where that’s possible. Some of these mountain roads don’t have a lot of turnoffs, while others will have little side roads that peter out in meadows and are probably popular spots for what you’re doing. If the weather is extra warm there may be plenty of park visitors camped everywhere. You’ll get checked for keeping food and trash away from bears, and be questioned about where you’re hunting since so much of it is wilderness. The park Facebook pages probably talk about bears and wolves seen from the roads in your area since it’s so close. Usually that means it’s a dead elk they’re feeding on.

Thanks guys. I realize any flat spot is good to setup a camp.... Other than state land or private. I'm just curious about the campgrounds because they are close to where we'll be hunting in unit 54. The campgrounds are just across the unit boundary in 51. I'm headed to West Yellowstone in June. I'm going to make the trek over to our hunting unit to get the lay of the land. We took the bear issues into consideration when choosing to apply in the unit. Never camped in grizzly country, but pretty used to black bears foraging around camp and a long as we keep our camp clean and secure, I don't think we'll have any issues. I am thinking about bringing one of my knaack job boxes to store and secure our dry goods in camp.

Just FYI I would check with forest service to make sure those campgrounds are even open during hunting season. They close some of those campgrounds quite early and some aren't open until late June.
