7 Broke Backcountry Reloading Vid

Anyone else catch the video Federal put out showing that their "alloy" case is reloadable? I think its all kinda BS and the video is missing many important details, all of which are the reasons people say its not reloadable. They also talk about the "premium" ammo cases are coated inside and out making them reloadable, but the cheaper stuff thats dull is only coated inside thus not recommended to be reloaded.

I dont know if they are thinking its a case stuck in die issue or what but they didnt show a single measurement of the case to show any sort of shoulder bump. I saw its taking 12 passes of a resizing die to get the case sized. This dude in a dorky lab coat does it in a single pass... no trimming or anything. just a video of the guy making a round with a sharpie mark on it and shooting it again.

Anyway, curious what the thoughts are of anyone who's seen it.

Demo rifles have been out for two years. There must be some hang ups if there’s still no reloading data or more reloading information other than the dude making the RCBS commercial. Or was it a Federal commercial? It sure felt like a RCBS commercial except there are no actual dies on the shelves.

I predict the cartridge will be a flop because it won’t be easily reloadable and that will sour dedicated shooters on the idea - in three years it will be an oddball has been.

He makes it look pretty easy. Modulus of elasticity for brass is about half what it is for high-strength steel; I'd expect it to be harder to reform, and yet he full-length resized in the video without much undo effort. Rather surprising, since the case has to deform plastically when resized. But, steel takes a permanent set under less strain than brass. He also noted that he used prototype dies that aren't available yet. Will be very interesting to see these dies when they come out!

Good points - he used an RCBS press and primer seater in the video, but mentioned prototype dies that aren't out yet. Since steel is far more brittle than brass, I'd guess that case life will be short.

Hopefully they figure it out - it would be nice to have an improvement in the basic brass case.

The 7BC cartridge targets a market of consumers of whom the vast majority could not care less about reloading.

i agree. i think this round is for the guy who has no interest in reloading.

the point im making about it is that they are saying it can be reloaded and did a video but didnt address the concerns people have such as resizing. sure he did a resize but just because he ran the die doesnt mean it worked. as i said in the post i believe rcbs said 12 passes for it to resize. the amount of effort they put in to "disprove" the reloading concerns was minimal.

I think the mass release to social influencers was one thing to start. It’s kind of annoying at this point how much shilling there is going on.

Next they came out as if they had some new revolutionary thing when steel alloy cases have been around for a long time.

Then they started saying it can do things it currently can’t and then make some video about reloading the round and then say “yeah see we told you could… but also nothing is available and we are still prototyping dies and there’s no load data yet…”

The real question is what percentage of hunter are working off the same box of ammo they bought in the 2000s. I beat that number is higher then reloaders.

I know a few myself. I’m the only person I know that reloads anything. At least family and friends.

Odd to be perturbed by a company trying to get their product some marketing/media exposure. What should they have done? Played it cool and made sure nobody heard about it so only the industry hipsters were up with it?

There were electric cars 100 years ago but they weren't teslas or rivians. If you could point me to some other examples of modern ammunition using steel cases to load at 80k PSI and get performance on par with cartridges that burn much more powder and have notably more recoil, i'll agree. 6.8 Fury is about it far as I know and it's a little different with the hybrid case. Frankly that hybrid case seems a little more enticing but still. It's more different than almost all other cartridge intros I can recall.

This seems like a "To Be Determined" item. You may be right but i've seen nothing conclusive.
