Hope everyone is getting ready to have great Thanksgiving. I currently have a BOTW 7mm Rem Mag which is awesome. However, I'm now looking at getting a 6mm that will shoot 115 Berger VLD. Looking at 20 or 22 inch barrel and want the speed to be around 3,000 fps. Range will be 400 to 600 yards, maybe if a perfect shoot out to 800 yards. Who in your opinion are the people to look at?

22" should be close to 3K in a 6 creed if you lean on it. My 18" is 2850 with 109's. They are local to me so I am biased, but have had good luck with Soldier Mountain Arms in Idaho. On my 7th or 8th different barrel chambered by them. Plenty of good gunsmiths though, just depends on what you are looking for component and cost wise.

Jon Beanland and Mike Manzella are two of the handful of smiths I've used that Id send more work to.

In Florida Exodus rifles seems to have a good reputation.

That said, there seems to be a correlation between new gunsmiths that are heavily hyped on forums and bad outcomes so I'd trust most of the bad reports and much less of the good ones..

Call him, it’s who I use.

Blue Mountain Precision built me a 25cal hammer and would recommend.

Marc at Spartan Rifles is an outstanding dude and does great work also.

Plenty of good smiths out there but even more that shouldn’t be working on guns. Just do your research and you will be good.

A 6-284 would be a speed demon with 112-115. I don’t have one but the 6um would be another option for a short barrel. Either way will be short on barrel life is my guess.

I was just looking at Blue Mountain Precision earlier this evening. I would get an extra barrel or two with this build. Been hearing a lot about the 6um and am very interested in it.

What style of gun are you wanting?

I’ve done this over a dozen times with several different builders (some of the supposed best and most well known) and there are only two I’d use again. Both were the only ones who produced functional and accurate rifles without problems, the first time.

This would be a bolt hunting rifle, for when I want something that is lighter than my 7mm rem mag.

I'd say any good qualified gunsmith can build a 6mm in a variety of different 24 caliber cartridges so finding one that's relatively close to you shouldn't be all that difficult but if you don't mind shipping you stuff across the country Defensive Edge Rifles built my 6 Creedmoor for me and it shoots crazy good. Mine is a semi custom build based on a trued Rem 700 SA Proof 20in barrel McMillan stock.

This was the first load worked up for my 6CM and I don't know how it could have turned out any better.

A 6 PRC (based on 6.5 PRC) would likely get you the velocity you’re looking for with a shorter barrel.

As for smiths, I’d be looking at (in no particular order):
- TS Customs
- Blue Mountain Precision
- High Voltage Armory

That is a shooter right there!

Never had a custom rifle built but do your research because the few of the smiths I've used to do various things have over promised timelines. T&C Fisher told me 2 weeks to bed a stock and thread a barrel and it was 2 weeks when he called me. A guy to consider.
