A while back I was gifted a box of these bullets.
So the other day I reloaded up some with 35gr of Varget for my 243.
Haven’t ran them through a chrono yet.

Has anyone used these bullets?
On what?

Thoughts about them?

Shot quite a few deer, antelope. pigs and bears with 95 and 129 ssts in 6mm rem and 260 rem respectively
They wound like a match bullet but give up quite a bit of bc
I would expect dead critters.

I have used those particular ones in a 6X45 and a .243. I have also used the 129 grain SST in a 260 Rem, and the 139 grain SST in a 7-08. They work great on deer and hogs, in my experience.

Mom killed a half dozen whitetail with that bullet when it was offered in the factory Hornady Custom load in her model 7. Never lost a deer. Blood trails weren't half bad. Accuracy was 1-1.25" but we've since replaced the stock trigger with a Timney and the rifle shoots way better so I have not doubt they would be a lot better if they were something still offered.

I don't load for mom's rifle. She doesn't hunt or shoot enough to justify the cost and her shots are usually inside 100yds so accuracy is plenty good for her shot distances. However if I did load for 243, the 95 grain SST or Nosler BT would be at the top of the list.

I did load the 140 SST in my 270. That was one bad dude. If I still loaded and had a 270, I would likely still shoot the SST.

Lots of big game kills with them. Deer and elk. They kill very well but can be extremely damaging to meat depending on shot placement.

I have tons of photos on my PC of vitals, wound areas, and broken bones if you want to see anything in particular.

What’s the ideal impact velocity to minimize meat loss and maximize wound channel for a center of lungs shot with these?

Pick the perfect speed?

Thanks for the replies.
Unfortunately I won’t be able to take this rifle/ammo on the next hunt to see performance as I didn’t get a chance to sight the gun in with the new ammo.

Used the 139SST in 7mm this year on a cow elk and three antelope. We didn't necropsy the elk but there was a fair amount of internal damage from what we could see. We did take apart the three pronhorn, however, and the internal damage was extensive. Impact velocity ~2250fps. Lots of fragmentation and quickly dead animals. They almost worked a little too well for my taste.

I was moose hunting, and an aquaintance was hunting elk in the same area.

We helped him drag out a large cow elk he had shot with the .243 win, and a 95 gr SST

I would have thought that cal/bullet combo would be the last one I would use, but it worked well for him that time.

I shoot the factory 95gr SST’s out of my .243. Keep in mind that the SST is a bullet designed for rapid expansion and terminal performance. It doesn’t perform best at high velocities because you’ll get over expansion. They will ruin meat fast if you hit shoulder. If you stay off the shoulder and into the vitals they are a devastating bullet. With that being said, every critter I’ve shot with the 95gr sst were very dead, very quickly. The more critters i shoot with it, the more confidence i have in it. Here’s a few of the critters.

If you had to pick an optimal velocity at impact for terminal performance on deer, what would you say?

Man I’m not an reloader or ballistic expert or anything, i just shoot box ammo. You’ll notice reading that the people who love the SST’s normally shoot heavy for Caliber and are shooting “slower” cartridges. The guys that say they grenade are generally shooting lighter for caliber or cartridge that shoot over 3k fps. Just my 2 cents, I’d try and keep it under 3k fps.

Gotcha.

Mostly asking with 6ARC in mind - 12” barrel I could probably have it moving 2600+ at the muzzle. Wondering if the 2200-2600fps window would be good for it.

on those 3 kill photos I dug into the performance of the bullet unlike previous kills with it. The first small buck was 150 yards broadside. Center punched through the lungs. Small entry, and quarter size exit. No bone contacted and there was a fist sized jelly mess in the lungs. It hit a 60 yard death sprint before nose diving. Blood was meh until the last 15 yards and opened up, but to be expected for a double lung.

The hog was at 25 yards on a bench above me, i thought it was quartering away when i shot it, turns out it was broadside. Bullet hit rib on entry and demolished the liver and back part of the lungs, left a half dollar exit. A small fragment of the bullet split off through the lungs and exited the armpit. Hog ran a 30 yard circle squealing and went down where i shot it. Blood everywhere. This was at max velocity on a large sow.

The last buck was at 30 yard quartering toward me. I shot it in the shoulder, the deer stumbled down the ridge 40 yards before dropping. No blood, no exit, but the shoulder was broken and the it looked like the vitals were hit with an egg beater. The bullet definitely fragmented into pieces and ruined a good bit of meat. But this was at 30 yards and max velocity.
