6mm /.243 hunting success on Big Game

Neat.

I'm asking 6mm question because I'm toying with the idea of building.....ehhh, something between 6ARC on the low end and 6mmCM on the high end. Just trying to sort of build a file in my head of what my options are.
I did an xc because brass was cheap and performance is very good. 39.5grs of 4350 gets me 2960 from my 21" and 3070 from my 27".

My 22" 6x284 does 3150 for comparison. I'm cool with leaving a bit on the table.

I fed a whitetail a 106 tap today from one of my XC's and was very impressed with the bullet performance. Impact velo about 2750. I couldn't get pics as it was raining like god was mad at me.

I'm loving the folder. I rattled this NX8 in my atv rack and missed 2 bucks Friday. I ended up with almost 4" of zero shift at 80 yards. Once it settled back in I vowed to never let it ride in the rack again. I hoped the Nightforce was going to be able to ride in the rack....but this is the second time I've lost zero and one time it rattled the guts out of my scope.View attachment 972178
Have you killed any others with the 106 TAPs?

I’ve only seen 3 kills with them and all were indistinguishable from a 108 ELDM kill basically.

Slightly off topic, but I just finished this whole thread and am fully on board the 6mm ARC train. I am going to order a 6 ARC barrel for my Thompson Center Encore. My thinking is I can order a longer barrel for the Encore to gain a little velocity, while still keeping a shorter overall profile due to the loss of receiver length that you have in bolt actions.

Is this something that would make sense, or am I completely overthinking? What barrel length would y'all choose for the 6arc in an Encore? FWIW, I already have a Christensen Ridgeline Scout in 6arc with a 16.5" barrel, but it just doesn't scream hunting gun and honestly I haven't even shot it yet. I have a problem.

I can't tell you what length to get but I can say that a CVA Scout with a youth-length stock and a 20" barrel and a YHM R9 suppressor is still very much 'treestand use short'.

In this picture, the gun on the (ETA: LEFT! It's on the left) is a CVA Scout with a CVA youth-length buttstock, next to a 16" AR with a magpul collapsible stock *extended to full length*. So a 20" barreled single shot is near the same length as a 16" AR:

I am a little new to this topic so bare with me. When looking at velocity at your farthest effective range for bullets like the eld-x and ballistic tip. Are you ok with 1800 fps or do you like a little more for wiggle room?

I’ve become a huge 6 creed fan.
My two tags punched this year were with a 6CM

Tikka action, 20” Bartlein 3B, fluted, Rokstok, US OG, High Desert bottom metal, factory mags, UM short knob, UM rings, NF 4-16 ATACR Mil-R reticle. 108gr factory ELD-M

Mule deer at 665 yards

Cow elk at 540 yards. 1st shot was high, behind the shoulder. She laid down when the rest meandered away. I got to 350 yards and put one in the back of her head.

That’s the first paint job that I’ve seen that makes the rokstok look good. DIY?

Also, congrats on punching some tags!

A buddy that I hunt with has a scout and its a hammer, he's taken a few deer and a couple antelope with it. If you reload that scout has alot of potential

The 6 GT is nice cause it uses a standard bolt face.
6 GT might fit the bill. I’m seriously considering one.

That is the other thing I have thought about. But either of them should fit in a Remington Model 7, which is what I am halfway thinking about (no guarantee I'll do it, it's just an idle thought at this point). A Rem 7 being sightly shorter than a 700SA or Tikka, with an 18" barrel and a reflex can, would be short enough for treestand use yet long enough for anything *I* intend to shoot. And either 6gt or 6cm would fit in it without the magazine being cramped.

You might check the 106tap thread that was floating around when the bullets showed up for sale. I can’t remember if it was posted there or not. Seen a few kills with them so far posted also.

Gotcha. I appreciate it. I’ve killed a few things with them, but haven’t had the chance to stretch the out enough to care about the BC

generally yes. Some will perform as low as 1400 but that’s outside of manufacturer recommendations nor has there been enough data that I’ve seen to say it’s consistent enough to trust.

I prefer to stick to a 2000fps limit for peace of mind. I also tent to try different bullets that aren’t as verified as others so that’s a factor for me. Plus, 2000fps gets me far past where I’m comfortable shooting animals anyway.
