6CM barrel length recommendations

This is Rokslide, all people think about is where their bullet hits 1800fps and think they are good to go.

Guys really ought to look at the wind number as much as terminal range. When 1mph of wind is moving your bullet more than a tenth you really should think about what your doing shooting that far
Facts! Which is why really short barrels make a lot of sense… unless you are forced to use “non toxic” projectiles then the longer barrels make more sense

I am in the process of having a 6CM built with intentions of putting it in a Rokstock lite. I don't reload so would be shooting factory ammo or purchasing through UM to get the 116TMK. is there any advantage of choosing an 18" barrel over a 16"? I will have a dedicated suppressor and considering the OG6s vs using my current TBAC Dominus. (also open to suggestions/recommendations on the suppressor choice)

My current comfortable range for hunting is inside 400 yards but if I can improve my skill set my goal would be to have effective terminal ballistics to 600 yards eventually.

Any input would be appreciated. Thank you in advance
I use a 26” 7.5 twist barrel for heavy bullets. I’m old school and want to maximize velocity.

How many of you are actually hunting at 800 yards?
I did the same mental masturbation a few years ago and was building out spreadsheets of cartridges, barrel length, etc to get out past 700 at 1,800. Then I started actually shooting and realized how ****ing far 700+ yards is, how hard hitting 2MOA without a bench at 500yds is, and now I'm cutting all my barrels and loading my ammo down a grain, etc.

Now I build for 1,800fps at 600yds, train for real shooting situations out to 550yds and self-impose a max of 300yds until I can nail every gong between 300-550, every shot, without a bench or bring prone. Maybe one day I'll get good enough to utilize that 600....but damn thats way out there when it comes to animals instead of steel (in bulky layers, cold hands and targets that don't stand still for >2 minutes).

Thanks. that helps. sounds like 18" would be the right option to give me the effective range I eventually hope to get to and still keep it over that 1800fps threshold for effective terminal ballistics on an animal. Appreciate everyone's input as I am sure this has been asked and answered many times but I couldn't find it in my search.
This is great response and good question. I’ve debated same thing for my 6cm. Question I asked myself is what shot opportunity can I close the distance vs not.

Yes: almost anything with decent cover and wind in your favor. If it’s not in our favo no shot anyway.

No: cross canyon; In his scenario wind is the bigger issue to learn. Very light cover scenario.

Not sure I helped answer the question, but in my scenario I have passed up shots at 550-650 yards cross canyon due to lack of skill. Then taking 1.5 day to travel on foot to put on a stalk, only to get busted.

So I went 20” and folding stock. Now to work on the skills to match the weapon capabilities, that takes longer than building the weapon, but I am making progress

Same, 500 yards is dang dang far let alone 600,700,800…
Did the same thing as you. Now I have a bunch of short barrels and don’t worry about 600-800 yards. If I ever move to the family ranch and can shoot out to 1000 yards regularly maybe I’ll stretch my limit but I’m just not there yet
I know there are some who can hit there regularly but there are a pile more who think they can…

Another vote for 16”, cut my .243 tikka to 16” with an OG6.5. I’m shooting 107’s and the gun shoots excellent for me. My son will be hunting with it this fall and had been getting consistent first round hits at 600 yards from field positions.

I would have zero hesitation with this setup out to 800 yards. Killed a 380lb spring bear with it at about 420. Love how easy it carries and stows away, unlike my last build 25” 280AI, I can keep this short little rifle in the truck all the time which equals way more practice on things like coyotes.IMG_7455.jpeg

Dare to be weird. I went 17”. It’s great. Now guys with 16” barrels are big doofuses with no velocity and guys with 18” are using big silly broomsticks. Lols. But nah I love it
