6 prc or 22 prc ?

You run into diminishing returns when the case volume goes up and the bullet diameter goes down. You may not get that much more velocity out of a 22 prc vs a 22 creedmoor. The brother of the 6 prc is promoted here as the 6 UM. I believe it uses a rsaum case necked down to 6mm. It’s essentially a magnum 6mm.

I’m hesitant to set up any new cartridge at the moment due to the advent of alloy cases driving technology improvements at the moment. What we think is great performance now may be left in the dust in a few years.

I was only considering the two prc’s just because I’m lazy and don’t want to change my bolt nose. And I could reuse my 6.5 prc brass. So the 22prc may be out of the picture.
How does the 6prc compare to the 6um?

It’s 75-100 fps slower. I built a 6prc before we could get um brass…Lapua, not my first time to build a round around their brass. I run a 105 hybrid in mine and with 18” barrel it’s 3100. Salty and I don’t regret going prc over the um except when I’m necking down :)

Sounds like you need a 6 UM. I love that and my 22 Creed. Honestly the 22 Creed covers 99.5% of my needs. But Ryan made the 6 UM sound sexy and I'd been drinking. The 6 UM just has more whallop past 700. Which honestly is a damn far poke without Devine intervention and luck.

22 Creed is pretty slick. Driving 88 tmks at 3073 with a 16" barrel. Basically no recoil. So you can cut weight on the rifle and be ok. But a 6 UM does better closer to 9+ lb.

Shoot tmks and give them a solid jump/mag length. It's still shooting just a touch over an inch or better for 10 at over 400 rounds. Already have a spare barrel ready to go. Load dev now that theres 88 tmks's was easy. All I did was load up 10 with a max charge of 565 and seated them to mag length. Shot the group and it was excellent.

Having a 223 trainer is key to owning hot rods.

What’s max charge of n565? PM me if preferred.
I am running n565 with 88eld

For what its worth, I'll definitely keep sticking to my 6prc. Has high-performance and perfect for longrange competition/hunting.

I have the 22-250, 243, 25-06, 6.5cm, 6.5 prc... the idea that I like is a 25 prc, twisted to allow you to shoot the heavies.

I must say though, that these new straight body, steep shoulders do not feed anything like the 25-06...

I’d like to have another rifle in 22 creed. Just not in the budget yet. The 6.5 prc is a custom rifle and cost a fortune and I’m happy with it. I just want to step down to 6mm.
I get the 135 atips to 2950 in a 19in barrel, and the rifle weighs in at 10 pounds loaded with suppressor.
Looks like I’m considering changing it to 6um or 6prc at this point. Based on other comments.

No issues just a PIA and I hate brass work.

I did buckle the first one because I listened to the internet versus my experience...I tried to neck it down in one pass. That didn't work for me with Redding FL sizer and Redding bushing (.271)...so I went in two steps, like I knew I should've to begin with. No issues, you will have a small bulge right at the neck shoulder junction that might be hard to chamber the first time but once fired all that straightens up and acts correct.

Zero regrets....although, if I was starting over right now...I'd prolly do a UM just because I could buy the brass at Unknown and not have necking down work to do. Plus, I like speed and you'll pick up the 75-100fps. I bought some 107's to try but haven't shot them yet.

Definitely.

6mm ARC is already being tested at high pressures, so .22 ARC is not far behind. If I can shoot those at Creedmoor speeds or better using cases that cost less than brass, I might not even need a trainer. Download for practice, full house for hunting. Reloading cost amounts to a couple more grains of powder than .223, so why not do it all from one gun?

@seaeagle99 and @Judd - for your 6prcs, have you had to replace a barrel yet. Just curious how many rounds to shoot one out. I was also looking at a 6prc build for hunting.
I've got a little over 250 rounds on mine...I planned for 1k and if I get there I'll be happy...if I don't I'll still be happy with the way it shoots and the lower recoil than my 6.5 saum.

When I shot benchrest an old mentor of mine used to tell me...Judd, they make barrels while we sleep at nite...shoot them until they tell you they are done and get a new one. Regardless of how many rounds that is...barrels are a consumable, just like bullets.

He was right...he also had barrels spun up 2-3 at a time.

Necking down is not an issue at all, takes a whole 30 seconds extra per case, once. For me and couple buddies shooting 6 prc a redding type s bushing die with .271 bushing and lapua brass is an easy one step neck down, I use imperial dry graphite to lube the neck. After running it through the die there will be a flair at the case mouth, running a .242 mandrel through it fixes that and your good to go in two handle pulls of the press. Very quick and simple. If your having a flare at the neck shoulder junction that is interfering with chambering or giving a stiff bolt close thread your die down until that is resolved, usually another 1/2 - 3/4 turn. I use 21st century mandrels and dies but there are lots of options. Any questions I'm happy to try to help. Been a fun project and really liking this gun, seems to be a real sweet spot in recoil and terminal performance.

What kinda speed would a 6um get in a 22in barrel shooting 110atip? If I can buy brass ready to go, that a better option. Everything is looking like 6um to me. 😁

I used Imperial sizing wax...next time I'll have to give the graphite a try. Thanks @Grizzle

I haven't tried one but my guess would be 3150-3300 ish. The masses have used 115 dtac (nose ringed) and 116 TMK's.
