6.5x284 hunters

I been shooting the 140 hybrids and the 156’s. Moved away from the eldx’s after some performance issues. Never lost a critter to them, but found they like a little distance to work properly IMO. The 156’s have been shooting lights out in my 6.5x284 26” Lilja tube. 4831sc and RL26 have proven very good so far too. I’ve killed a 5 or so elk and a pile of deer and antelope with mine and love it

What velocity were you getting with the 156s?

I ran 140gr Amaxs with RL19, very easy to develop a load and found accuracy around 2950fps-- Now I run the ELDM in most of my rifles with great results on game from deer to red stag

140 VLDs and 140gr Nosler B.T. have both shot really well for me behind 4831SC...

The VLDs in the 284 were the most finicky bullet with respect to seating depth I have ever shot but once I got it figured out it was a one hole gun all day long

I was getting around 2900 with RL26. Gun is out of commission for a little bit for a bolt problem unrelated to the loads. I got an m16 extractor installed and getting crazy pressure with my old mild loads

Was able to finally get out and test a couple loads to build Off of 129 ablr’s were testy on powders but found a couple good loads. My wife’s gun hated retumbo luckily mine liked it. Exciting to finally get out and start working up loads for the new guns.

Reviving this thread hoping somebody would chime in with velocities out of a 20” 6.5x284. Is 2850 reasonable to expect with a 147?

H1000, 7828ssc type powders would be more in the upper 2700s to low 2800 realistically ?
Take 65prc data, subtract 50fps and that's where you'll be. N560 is a very good speed powder in the 65prc, but is temp sensitive. Hopefully you have lapua brass, it's definitely better than Peterson when I shot 65x284 a handful of years back.

For what it's worth I had two built years ago. The idea at the time was a big one for play and a small one for hunting. Anyway both 8 twist barrels from Lilja one varmint and one was a #3 maybe 4? The varmint barrel was 26" the sporter was 22". With the same load of 53gr of 4831sc under 140 vld's the longer barrel was 3,000fps on the nose and the shorter one was 2,780fps. I never tried other powders to try and get more velocity I just went with it until I got the itch for something else.

I’ve had awesome results from Nosler Match Grade HPBT 140gr
~2780fps out of this setup

Custom build MG Arms 6.5x284

Whitetail, blackbear and coyotes have all fallen.

Longest shot was 388 yard coyote.
