6.5 WSM with a 20" barrel and 156 Bergers

I don’t think you would get quite get there. I have a 23” barreled 6.5 saum now that I know wouldn’t hit 3k with 156’s just from shooting 140’s thru it. I may load a few 156’s this week just for fun but I just don’t see them getting to 3k.

I did a 264 Wm last year with .200 FB and it would run 156’s at 3100 (26”) Even at -30 fps per inch that would put it at 2920. Granted the WSM’s are way more efficient but -30 an inch might also be conservative.

That same rifle would put out a 147 eldm at 3240, so just guessing off Weiserbucks getting 3100 with his with the 147 would put it somewhere around 2960, then take off a little for the +2” of barrel he has and your right around that 2920 ish area.

I’m just guessing here if you couldn’t tell but it’s the best I got.

You might luck into a real fast barrel and get closer, or you could get a slow barrel like my current saum and top out at 2900 lol.

We can only speculate, just build it and find out! If you can't get the speed you want, pick an appropriate weight solid that'll stabilize in ur twist(I suggest 7.5) and you'll get those to 3200+ they penetrate like mad, take em shoulder or raking, no fear of blowups.
I ended up using 124 grain Hammer bullets in mine, 3350 fps and worked great on the one deer it took .

So you get there by pushing the hell out of it and showing significant pressure signs? Maybe. My guess is that you'll have inaccuracy and high ES. Just depends on what you want more...max speed or accuracy

You get there by experimenting with appropriate components and decide to use the best combination. Accuracy, speed and ES can be great with the right components.

Yes it can. Who doesn't like great speed with accuracy/consistency? But when you're after over the top, maybe unrealistic speed... I've never seen one shoot with any accuracy or consistency.
Any time in the past when i started getting to the edge (or a little past), it never worked out. Never. It's a game of finding out what the rifle will put up with

Lots of guys running 130s at 3200 from 6.5 saum and 20” barrel I’m sure you could get the 156 to 3000 in a wsm just might take some experimenting with powders. Rl26 would be where I would start

Can you ask them to try a 156? haha

I think you would be really close with a 6.5 SAUM Improved/6.5 SM. You would definitely need a medium length action though.

I think you could, I was getting 3040 ft/s with Berger 170’s from my 270wsm with a 24” barrel, RL26 was the powder.

What twist? I have a 270 WSM is like to shoot these out of, but I don’t want to waste my time if they just won’t stabilize out of a 10 twist.

1:8, don’t waste your time with a 10.

3000' with 6.5 SAUM with the 156 I dont believe would be obtainable with my experience with my 20" SAUM (.120 FB). I'm running 143 ELDx at 3015 at a node with RL26. During load working, I did see close to 3100 once and primer blew. Primer pockets are toast after 2 firings above 3050 for my chamber and barrel. I think 2900 to 2950 might reasonably obtainable in a 20" with 156s. I'm getting close to rebarreling my SAUM but if anyone has a few 156s laying around, I would be happy to test with RL26, H1000, and 4831SC and report back.

Thanks for the intel. There are several people getting 2900 with a PRC and VV565. So I figure if I +P a 6.5 SAUM I can get there. Will post up when she’s together.

I’ve got a 20” 6.5ss. 140 hvld at 2990 with zero Pressure signs. Ran it to 3050fps where bolt lift changed but still no signs on brass. I bet with a 156 and a wsm you would be pretty damn close to 3k. Either way if it didn’t make it you wouldn’t have long to rebarrel to something else.

is it going in short/med/long action?
