6.5 WSM with a 20" barrel and 156 Bergers

I'm getting 2865 avg out of my 7saum with 150 Eld-x out of a 20" barrel...

Broz got 2900 out of a 6.5 PRC in this build.

I think you could, I was getting 3040 ft/s with Berger 170’s from my 270wsm with a 24” barrel, RL26 was the powder.

With some good brass and probably something like Retumbo, RL26,N570, RL33 I would bet a 6.5SAUM could get close to 2900-2950 in a 20” barrel. I know in a 24” barrel 3000+ is doable.

I would think just over 3k would be a good place in a 25-26” saum, don’t think you’d want to try to get there in a 20” barrel. WSM, yeah probably but still not a mild load.

I can picture the fire ball now😁

4831sc.. I tested RL 19 as well but didn't get the results I was looking for..

I’m going to guess you could push it quite a bit harder. I worked 175s up over 2900 FPS with rl26 in a 22” SAUM. That is probably over rated pressure but didn’t show any signs to indicate it was crazy high. Settled on low 2800s with h1000.

It's a light weight mountain rifle, and doesn't wear an astral telescope for glass.. I settled on a node that was 4 shots into .338 @ 200 yds. I was satisfied with the velocity..

Rl26 will be the powder you want, you should still get 100% or close to with 20" barrel. Will you get up to 3k fps? From adg brass probably but it'll be a max/hot load likely with ejector and or bolt lift. Accuracy node will likely be down around 2900fps. Will an animal know the difference of 3000 vs 2900? No it will not.......

RL 26 gives me weird pressure spikes so it’s a no go. Thinking VV 565.

All other things being equal 2900 vs 3000 can matter at 800 yards.

You'd be close, I had a 22" 6.5 WSM and it would send 147's at 3100+ with H1000. It was throated to long for a SA , medium action would be best . Basically hit pressure right at 100% case fill with properly head stamped Bertram brass.

Wow! With H1000 to boot, impressive.

We can only speculate, just build it and find out! If you can't get the speed you want, pick an appropriate weight solid that'll stabilize in ur twist(I suggest 7.5) and you'll get those to 3200+ they penetrate like mad, take em shoulder or raking, no fear of blowups.

What about the 6.5 SS? Would that perform better than the 6.5 SAUM?
Equal presssures they will perform the same. It's competely against normal thinking that a smaller capacity with less charge makes more velocity than a larger case w/ more powder. The Sherman cases operate well above normal saami max to get the high fps they do. I'm not knocking them, as I have a 25sst and 7ss max. BUT there is no free lunch, his almost zero taper 40° cases are probably running 70-75k psi when you see traditional psi signs. This is why he sells adg brass and recommends rws for his long action cases, they're all tough as hell brass to hold the high psi.

I always assumed that on pressure. What's the real brass life on the Sherman Shorts?

I'm still forming my brass, however my friend runs a 6.5SS W/ 156 @ 3150 from a 26" Broughton barrel and he's getting on 5 reloads, only lost 10% due to pockets but I suspect it'll mostly be shot by 7 firings.
