6.5 PRC Felt Recoil

I am not a huge fan of brakes as I had a friend shoot a buck next to me without me knowing he was going to shoot and my ears rang for quite some time. I haven’t gotten on the silencer train quite yet
I think the silencers are a scam for hunting…lol, so I hear you there.

I built a 25 prc and it’s not bad to shoot, but barrel life is around 1k. Not conducive to a lot of practice. It runs the 134 eldm at right around 2950. I will be rebarreling my 25-06 to a 25 cm when it’s shot out. Less recoil and more barrel life with the same 134.
I would’ve thought it would be faster for a 134 in a 25 PRC.

Depending on the density altitude where you’re hunting you can achieve effective terminal ballistics well in excess of 900 yds with factory 6CM ammunition. 22CM gets close as well.

If you need farther in a field weight rifle, the 6UM will get you there.

I definitely appreciate shooting and hunting suppressed. Hunting with guys shooting brakes just hurts
Either way you need hearpro to avoid damaging your hearing. Save yourself several ounces and buy some nice hearpro. It has become a tacticool thing that I think is pretty funny. I was watching a horse video of one of the guys here and he shot his supressed 223 without hearpro accidently and blamed the group on that.

Most people don’t realize shooting rifles with brakes you need double hearing protection to bring it to hearing safe levels. Obviously environment/surrounding area etc play a factor, but I’ve spent a career shooting in enclosed areas and wish I was doubling up and using a suppressor earlier in my career

A brake doesn’t actually increase the max DB level, rather just the perceived due to the redirection of gases, so unlikely additional damage occurs with a brake vs without. We can star a new thread to debate this. Sorry OP for taking this off topic.

Or, if you have a suppressor, would a 6.5 PRC feel like shooting a 6CM?

I'm kind of curious about this as well and was thinking a suppressor on a 6.5 PRC. That would be a step down from a .300 Win Mag. My 16" .308 SFAR is a joy to shoot with a suppressor and feels more like a 5.56.

Just my .02 but for a one gun setup id go 25 or 6.5 creed. Pretty good at everything (power, range, recoil, barrel life etc). For a two gun setup id go with a 223 or probably a 22 arc and a 6.5 prc (great recoil and barrel life out of the 22 cal and the 6.5 prc has decent recoil and barrel life for a very capable setup for anything.
Personally I run a 300 RUM, 6.5 prc, 6.5 creed, and 223. The RUMs no fun to shoot, but great to hunt with. The prc’s fine to shoot and hunt with, the 223 and creed are great to shoot and ok to hunt with.

No, it doesn’t feel like a 6 creed. Its nicer to shoot but a 6.5 PRC suppressed is not a 6.5/6/22 creed.

You have a 243 and 338 already and want to shoot targets to 1000 and game one day out to 500-600 possibly. Just get the 6.5 creed and be done
. Its the middle ground of what you already have. Good barrel life, take any game animal. Not a lot of recoil. Lots of factory options in ammo and rifles. Or reload your own. I've never had a picky 6.5 creed. I know 6.5 creed isn't the newest sexy, but it just works.

I had a 6.5 prc, have several 6.5 creeds and 243's. The prc is a good bit more wallop than the creed. Prc was sako s20, cm is tikka upr. If you handload you can download a prc to creed easily, or gas up a creed to prc levels if needed. Personally I'd either go creed or 30 cal magnum.

My 6.5 PRC was about 12lb. Recoil was pretty nill suppressed.

Sold it only to buy a lighter rifle.

Also wanted to go to a shorter barrel and the 6.5 PRC loses a bit of speed the shorter you go.

Ended up going to a 6 UM. A lot better ballistics than the 6.5 PRC especially when you start cutting the barrel.

Between a 6 Creed or a 6.5 PRC having to do it over again knowing what I know now I'd go 6 Creed. But honestly if it's legal where you hunt look at the 22 Creed.

Short barreled 22 or 6 creed like 16-18" is prettt slick. Once you understand impact velocity matters more than energy it opens a new world of possibilities.

I don't know if this will help you but I have a fairly wide range of rifles all of which have at a minimum 200 to 250 rounds per year put through them. All my shooting is suppressed, no brakes, no braked suppressors. 300PRC (the heaviest recoiler) to a 22LR Bergara Trainer (lightest recoiler). Included in my rotation are two 6.5PRCs one a 10ish lb rifle scoped and ready to hunt, the other in a weighted MPA chassis that tips the scales slightly over 20lbs. I would put the hunting 6.5PRC between my 7PRC hunting rifle, also 10ish lbs and my 25-06AI hunter 10ish lbs but in an XLR chassis. I would say the 6.5PRC 10 lber would lean more towards the 25-06AI recoil than the 7PRC recoil. For reference the 25-06AI has a bit more recoil than my 6.5 Creedmore in an MDT Oryx chassis, which is on the heavy side. The 20 lb 6.5PRC has such little felt recoil I hardly notice it. Also for reference I have not shot a 6CM but I have shot a 22CM in a Rokstock and that is a nothing burger as far as recoil.

Desired distance is 600 and in. In reality at the moment I’m probably only skilled enough to shoot to 300-350 that’s why I’d like something I like to shoot to practice and extend that. For targets/rocks it would be fun to shoot out to a 1000
I use a .308 win for everything you mentioned here. 6.5 CM is fine as well, but there’s less barrel life. For a do it all rifle I’d pick the former…
I have have both, so I have my bases covered.

If you have a suppressor or are willing to get one, 6.5 prc is so much fun to shoot, for me. Depends on the rifle setup I'm sure. But I went from a Browning Abolt 300wsm (no suppressor) to a Tikka T3x 6.5 prc with suppressor and it's incredibly fun to shoot and practice with. Immediately installing a Limbsaver recoil pad helped perhaps. I went from dreading practicing with the wsm to just loving the 6.5 prc and shooting a lot more often. Similar barrel length, 23 vs 22, respectively.
I also have a 6.5 CM I shot a lot last year (no suppressor) prior to a hunt and it was a great experience. My suppressed prc seems similar in felt recoil to an unsuppressed 6.5 CM, maybe less recoil with the suppressed prc. I'd lean more towards suppressed prc in enjoyment over the CM unsuppressed. Same barrel length.
That said, I want to buy/build a 6mm something someday. Making my way down the smaller caliber rabbit hole.
So if you can/do have a suppressor, it opens up some options I think. For me, big no to a muzzle brake.

Yeah no brakes for me either! Thanks for sharing and glad you’re loving your rifle!
