I'm seeing less people shooting 6.5CM but I think they all still own one. A buddy still chose one for each of his kids. I still shoot one at targets because burning 40 grains of powder hurts less than 80 grains when powder has doubled in cost. I am now shooting whitetails with a 6.5 Grendel.

Like stated people are going to the 6.5PRC (and to a limited extent 7PRC) BUT I think a ton of guys are going back to the classics because they were the cartridges that were available the last few years. I'm seeing a lot friends consider the 308 because ammo and components were generally available and recoil allowed for spotting their own shots. They also realized they don't need a big 300PRC or 28N to knock down an elk within 99% of their hunting scenarios.

Where do you live that 6.5 Creedmoor isn't a legal deer cartridge?
Iowa. Has to be 35 cal for gun 1, gun 2 or muzzle/pistol. Many Midwest states are similar with straightwall limitations.
get to use a 35 whelen, but can’t use a 6.5 cm. Silly, yes, but that’s the rules. Reasoning has always been they don’t want long range cartridges. we only went away from shotgun only, 6-8 years ago, bottleneck were only legal 2 years ago.

It is a Ruger American Predator. Definitely nothing special. The shops are full of CA, browning, tikka etc...
Maybe it's your actual gun that they don't want, not necessarily the caliber. I'm not knocking it per se, but that's a low end rifle with QC and accuracy issues.

I'm reluctant to step my foot in the water here since I don't have a dog in the fight but--. I saw a show the other day about the 6.5 . They said that it is a 308 and that by going to a 6.5 bullet it gave the bullet better stability. That made sense.

I remember as a kid that you could get 6.5 swedes for $50. Many were purchased as an intro gun for their kids. A couple of years ago I inheirited one and gave it to a friend for that use.

In that same period you could get wwII surplus carbines for similar prices. People bought them for entertainment like 22s. I haven't seen one since the 60s.

I bought a 7mm08 for my wife in a Browning micromedallian. Nice gun! Light and it fits my wife. I haven't seen one since. It was handy since as a 7mm had a really good choice of bullets.

I never saw many 270s but I was never interested largely because of its poor choice of bullets.

I understand the demand in the midwest and east but don't see any reason to give up what has worked for a lifetime for a 6.5 or any of the short magnums. All of which seem to come with exponential increases in the cost of ammo.

I'm no big Ruger American fan but I've zeroed probably a dozen and they all shot within 1.5 moa 3 shot groups with factory ammo. 2/3 of them within an inch. Recoil is stiff and stocks fairly flimsy, but they shoot for the $.

@KenLee it's an OK gun for the money. My buddy got one for $400 new in .243 and I shot it at the range. I just wouldn't expect the secondary market to pay much for it vs better made guns.

Maybe the short mags are expensive. https://ammoseek.com/ammo/6.5mm-creedmoor <-- 100 active listings of 6.5 creedmoor on the first page from $0.845 - 1.10 per round. You can get low quality 308 a little cheaper but for same quality is generally priced very alike.

Market's been flooded with low cost bolt guns chambered in 6.5 cm that shoot MOA or better. There was 50 guns at a banquet I attended recently and 7 or 8 of them were rifles chambered in 6.5 cm; and this was in MN where rifles are allowed for deer hunting in only half the state.
