Howdy. Long time lurker first time poster here. I love reading this stuff and some good info to boot.

I elk hunt nearly every fall except last year our cows were calving. I obviously didn't plan that right lol. I was mad at myself all year for breeding my heifers when I did. It put them calving right at Sept 1!! So I didn't head west with my livelihood ready to have little ones. Anyway I have 2 weeks to get it on this fall 2018.

I have killed a few elk with a bow. I get in Great shape before heading out. . Have excellent quality pack stock or 4 wheelers. All necessary camping/survival/hunting gear is on stand by. For bivy hunting or packing in either way.

My question is this... I have only hunted 42/421 north of paonia, and 54 in the West elk wilderness. I would really like to slip up the muddy basin in 521. Looks like big country with the right kind of country. I know there is several camps along the road there but by the piles of beer cans and the fat horses I'd say they don't get much done.

Where would you go with 2 weeks vacay and a string of good stock horses and a good set of legs under you?

Food for thought. Thanks.

There were 2 bivy camps located in that basin last september with a few guys archery hunting. All of the sign we saw was at least a week or 2 old. If I had good pack stock no question in my mind I would go deeper into the raggeds. Its been my limiting factor as to how far i'm willing to go due to the rough terrain.

I would not go anywhere where anyone ever posted about a specific location on a public forum... Now that you posted about it, there's probably a couple hundred people looking it up to see if it looks like a good place for the fall.

My experience in Muddy Creek is limited. Only one season spent there. And, that will be the only one spent there. I Met some mule deer hunters from Nevada. Elk hunters from NC, Illinois, WV besides us, Iowa, and half of Denver from what I could tell. There were pack strings on Electric Mountain. There was sheep every where to boot. It's been a few years since my visit so, things might have changed some. Way to many CO wildlife officials telling non residents that's the place to go is my guess. That's how we ended up there.

Ya it hasn't changed much. Plenty of folks see that big basin on Google and think there's a bull behind every aspen.
