Learn how to call I called 12 bulls in nine days when I had the tag had one as close as 7 yards
And enjoy every second of it get a good idea on wat u want to spend your tag on so you can make quick decisions and not regret passing on something

lol I’m not sure exactly how far I got in penetration that was actually the last arrow and I purposely sent it thru the shoulder. The previous arrows weren’t in the shoulder but behind and I did get get complete pass thru :)

I believe this one would make the 40"+ range.

I haven't had the tag myself, but the shiras moose I see often seem to have somewhat underwhelming palms and a narrower spread. I count points and look for the size of their brow tines when I'm sizing them up. There's quite a few good moose in my usual area. Unfortunately, I don't have many good pictures of them.

I have seen at least two that I believe would have made 50".

Lots of folks only seem to talk about width on moose. I would encourage you to not get too caught up in width, but to consider the overall look of a bull.

Here are two shiras bulls from a long time ago that are very similar in width ~1-2" apart IIRC, both very close to 50". I know they were both killed later that fall, and once upon a time I knew how wide they actually were. While their widths are very comparable, the one bull just can't hold a candle to the other in over all look.

For me this is exactly it. for my OIL tag in WA I was focused on the overall look, I wanted something with a nice spread but more importantly I wanted a bull that had pretty wide paddles, double brows and some short points. I didn't want a bull that had skinny paddles and long points that looked more like an elk than a moose. I would venture that most mature bulls have a 40" or greater spread.
