Looking to build a .375 Ruger for use in BC. Mainly for moose hunting in remote country with too many bears. Normally the backup carries a 12ga but we had an issue last year where a slug gave a moose a headache without penetrating through the skull. I’d prefer something a bit more stout for our next adventures, especially if it’s a big griz.

I don’t see much info online about the Defiance CRF action, anyone have hands on experience with it? Wildly expensive but I like their actions and nitride coating. Snowy mtn is building their Alaskan model off of it, but I don’t see reviews on that either.

Have a Clymr stock and bottom metal on hold, planning a snowy mountain 20” barrel for it. Looking at the 260 accubond or 270 LRX for bullets.

Wow pretty crazy about that 12 gauge slug! Not to change subject on your post but, what was the distance of the shot on the moose with it?

5 yards.. 2 3/4” shell. I’ll go look for the exact model in a bit.
You can see the perfect circle it left on the skull!

I don’t have any experience with the defiance crf action but I built a 375 ruger several years ago on a pre 64 Winchester action and a 22 inch shilen barrel. The first load I tried with 260 accubonds put 5 shots into a .7 moa group at 2800 fps. That load has killed kudu, gemsbok, eland, wildebeest and several wild hogs back home. The Accubond performed well on everything. Put one in the right spot and you won’t be disappointed.

Omar has a defiance crf in stock on his website. Hoofta $$$$ though.

It’s to bad alpine rifle craft doesn’t make a magnum action. The defiance crf is hitting that price point.

Essentially you’re building a CRF version of the Gunwerks Skuhl. I don’t have the CRF version, but have essentially the same rifle you’re looking to build, Defiance action, ClymR stock, chambered in 375 HH. I also have a spare bolt and barrel to use for 9.3x62.

Along with the last few guys I concur you seem to be making a very expensive solution to a problem that is already solved by Ruger. I’d look for an old African or Guide gun…the new ones are ugly as a Savage…

I understand finding an expensive solution to a relatively simple problem. Sometimes you just want it your way. I did start a 9.3x62 build on crf from. Zermatt. Ended up going with 7 prc barrel instead and bought a ruger guide gun in 375. I carry the ruger more probably because I'm not worried about beating it up. Since I carry it more I shoot it more.

I’m heading up to look in a couple weeks while going on a black bear hunt in the area. I’d like to get the action in hand and see what all the $$$ are about.

Mike makes a great action but in this case I’d stick with steel instead of Ti to add weight. I’d like this rifle to be 9lbs scoped as it’ll have some wallop.

Any regrets? What bullets have you sent out of it and how has the performance been? What scope did you top her with?

I’m a tad stubborn and like nice things so that does lead to me spending too much coin!

As Samson, vern, and others have stated the cheap solution is a Ruger Hawkeye (if I can find one) or re working a Pre-64. I’d still like to put hands on the defiance and see if it’s worth it to me to build something a bit different that’s cool. I’ll use it a couple times each year and I think having one proper boomer in the safe is always a good call.

Not too surprising there’s no real reviews on the defiance due to the price tag and obvious solutions you guys have already mentioned.

Great idea with the lever…Bighorn Armory or Wild West Guns could make a great stopper.

Also came back to say that is a might skookem ram in your avatar. Damn!

Only regret is I wish I did a slightly heavier contour on the 375 (I have the barrel listed here actually). Not a recoil fan and the places I want to take it aren’t suppressor friendly.

Love the platform though and it’s nice to have a “big gun” that feels the same as my non-DG guns. I have a CZ550 that I’ve used to take some African DG and, while a great rifle, it just feels “big” all around. The Skuhl knock-off feels like my deer rifle carrying it around, just a little heavier.

I use it in the 9.3x62 configuration wearing a Maven RS1.2 and an AB Raptor in it. If I was to go hunting bears, I would bring it in that configuration.
