358 Winchester custom rifle build

I now have an AR 10 Roam upper and two barrels to choose. A Faxon 308 Carbine pencil barrel and a W/C 358 Winchester barrel. I think it will end up a 358 Winchester and have a lightweight TA lower. It will be a gas gun because I don't want to fight a bolt in a tapered case. Be Well Brothers, BG.

I think so. I have killed whitetails with a single shot. Almost always a DRT, no tracking. The stainless might be a little rough at first but running the bolt on an empty gun many times will smooth it out. As to trigger you might have to get it adjusted. Only you will know that. It should be a good gun. Some of my favorite guns are the older tang safety Rugers. Be Well Brother, BG.

I am in agreement that find a short action winchester or ruger left hander and do a rebore or rebarrel. It will be plenty accurate for 300yds and in. I am not really up on the LH rifles but I am not sure if Ruger made SS short atcion left handers, might need to get a blued one.

My on the ground rifle for the northeast is a M77 MK II, 20" #2 Douglas in 358win. , MPI ultralight stock in the Kimber pattern and a straight 4 power. Its light enough to keep in hand all day and suprisingly accurate

Well,
I’d like to build this gun out so I can travel with it.
My theory is why I have 10 guns when you could have one or two that do the job anywhere in the country.

I never heard of blazer that’s why I’m posting on here because I am new to building rifles.

I picked the 358 Winchester because it’s the underdog of the 35 caliber. It’s also making a comeback and I’m gonna get into hand loading.
Based upon my research, there’s room under the hood for that round.

I don’t think my state has restrictions on semi or minimal calipers.

Thank you for your response.

1) Build what you want.

2). Zermatt Actions have CRF. Both of mine feed great and extract great. My only regret is that both are long actions.

Ive got a ruger 77 hawkeye in 358, its surprisingly accurate, like cover them with a dime at 100 yds.

Its probably overkill for the whitetail I hunt, but dead is dead... for what it's worth my go to deer rifles are 6arc, 6.5 grendel, 243, or even a 223, past 300 yds I move up to 6.5 cm & prc

I like the 358 because I have previously stated you can get some 358 cases, match prep them and reload in the 358 Winchester die set. I have used 180 gr Barnes, 200 gr Remington bulk in RN and SN, 247 gr Hunter's cast bullets with a flat point, and 38 cal soft wadcutters in a subsonic squirrel load. A close range varmint lod could be made with 38 Hollow base wadcutters hard cast loaded upside down. Most of my deer kills were the Remington bulk bullets. RN for close/brush hunting and pointed SPs for open areas just because I could. Some times we hunt with others and have to follow up a wounded deer. They never move after a shot from old Bessie Ann, my Savage 99 brush gun born around 1972. Be Well Brothers, Bearded Gnome.

Late to this party!

358 fan. Patrick smith has a lot written stuff on the net and his light weight bolt build was a 358, something he told me he settled on after years of hunting and with his rambling gun. This is before all the bullet advancements.

My answer was a. BLR 358. I do like levers while standing or stalking tight timber. I think a takedown would be better. But I know you wanted a bolt.

If it’s a woods gun and less than 300 yards I’d just use the one company making factory- hornady 200 interlock at 2475. Works more than fine at those ranges.

I’m pushing 2670 with a 200 gr hammer hunter even at my low elevation this is 400+ range pending wind. You’ll get that only with aggressive double base powders.
