358 Winchester custom rifle build

The old .35 Winchester, chambered in the 1895 Winchester, is a near ballistic twin to the .358 Winchester. The former developed quite a reputation in the mountain west for game back in the day.

I've been trying to figure out how to build the lightest weight AR-10 chambered for the .358 Winchester. For sub 300 yards it might be a hoot in dense timber.

It's the lightweight (7ish pounds all in) part that makes that difficult and probably impractical. Lol.

I like your cartridge choice and have used same years ago but now using 338Fed. I have a different rifle on Defiance Action and would be skeptical if using it for our long, remote hunts here in AK as the tolerances don't allow for dirt etc.

Wilson combat makes a 7lb 358win ar10.
Probably could put some carbon bits on it and drop .5-.75lbs. Would get pretty close.

You are correct there is no comparison between a 35 Whelen and a 358 Win. Look at the load data. The top fps in a 358 Win is 2,300/2,400 out of a 23" barrel. Cut that down as far as CAV1/8 is talking about and you are what, 2,100? This would be a fine 150 yard rifle if that is what a fella wants. The 35 Whelen would be substantially more versatile. My 35 Whelen with a 22" barrel is at 2,750fps with 225gr SGKs.
I guess it depends on which bullets you are talking about. My .358 will do 2350 fps with speed 250gr hot cors, 2550 with 225gr sierra game kings, and and 2670fps with 180gr barnes ttsx's. All from a 20" barrel. In like barrel lengths, the whelen is approximately 150-200fps faster than a .358.
