350 legend/ 223 / 6.5 Grendel - bolt action

Looking into a 350 legend for my kids. They are 10 and 7. Recoil seems minimal.

Currently using a 6.5 Grendel in an ar platform but the rifle is just so heavy.

Looking at the 20 in ruger American gen 2 it’s only 6.6lbs.

Anyone using this round ? I do not live in a straight wall ammo state. But knockdown and recoil seems right for them. Thoughts ?

I've chimed in on so many different "what rifle for my age XX kid?" threads that I thought I'd try to consolidate my thoughts here.

My oldest son is 14 now, started shooting centerfire rifles at 9. My younger kids started shooting centerfire rifles at between 5-7 yrs old. 5 kids shooting now, and a bunch of their friends that I have been involved or around as they learn to shoot. probably 20-ish kids? Here's what I've learned in the last 5-6 years.

Recoil matters, a lot. "Handles it pretty well" is way way different from "ideal for building skills as a rifleman." My oldest loves to...

My 10 yr old boy has been shooting a CVA single shot 350 Legend for 2 years now and handles the recoil with zero problems. Has killed 3 deer with it including one this year that he dropped in its tracks

For sure - just have to use the correct ammo. Less recoil, better ballistics, longer effective range, cheaper ammo. And much better selection in suppressors.

This thread is crazy long, and a bit slow to get started. But, it should ease any concerns with using a .223 for any big game.

The 77gr TMK delivered by a .223 is where I ended up after many discussions and objective data regarding bullet performance and numerous pics of field results.

Now for the delivery system. Accurate. Repeatable. Reliable. Reasonable weight to afford steady shot placement and the ability to spot my own impacts...

Yeah, if you decide on 350 legend still, I’d definitely go with a 16” over 20”, especially considering weight is one of your main concerns. 350 legend gains hardly any velocity past 16” and does surprisingly well all the way down to 12.5”. Plus, like was already mentioned, it makes a suppressor way more manageable.

I dove into the 223 after reading this thread and seems that’s the way to go.

Deciding between a 20 and 22 inch barrel now

Why do you feel the 223 is better ? I am diving deep into this and it seems the 350 has the edge over the 223 for white tail

If you don't like the ar's weight, id just go to the 6.5 g ruger american. Not sure id want to go down to a 223 on deer with a 7 yo. 6.5 grendel is a little more forgiving as far as shot placement. Honestly I like my ar's for kids hunting rifles, we hunt from a see thru blind so they can move if they want to. Rifle sets in a tripod so the weight isn't an issue. A 123 sst or simular is a very effective whitetail load, and hardly any more recoil than the 223.

This is currently what we doing. 6.5g on an ar platform on a tripod.

Was just looking for a lighter bolt gun set up

You're tracking that 350 legend is just a straight wall 223 that lobs fatter bullets slower, right?
