What's the goal?
The goal was to buy a new rifle. I have a guy with both calibers in left hand for sale. The 340 is a wood stock and it’s an older model Weatherby not produced in left hand anymore. The 338/378 is a new accumark with a synthetic stock. The 340 is 800. The other is 1800

The .340 is a decent deal. It is also the better platform if you want to make changes like a rebarrel.

Hard to find good left hand options.

My dad has an older 340 Weatherby and its a beautiful rifle. I want to kill something with it someday. That being said Im not taking it unless its just for fun. If you hand load, the 340 Weatherby will do anything you could ever want... Too damn much recoil tho to shoot it enough to get proficient with it and costs too much to shoot. Its a cool rifle tho... Id save the coin and get the 340, put it up above your fireplace.... Then buy a $1000 tikka in a 6.5prc or 6.5cm with the savings and shoot that.

My last Weatherby was a 338-378 Accumark and it was kind of a turd. It shot fairly decent but only if I slowed it down. Used a variety of different powders and bullets with 225 Accubonds w/H1000 shooting the best but like I said only if I kept the load relatively mild. If I tried to push it very hard at all the groups would open up and look like a shotgun pattern.

Some people still have the bigger is better/deader mentality. Or he just might want one. I have a 338 rum that shoots absolutely fantastic, however it's such a burden to shoot the with muzzle blast and recoil, it stays in the safe! To each their own.

200 accubond or partition in ur Rum and split the brownie down the middle. You think you need a 20mm cannon to kill a bear? If you're busting alder tickets in close quarter get a 45-70 lever gun.

"Bigger is Better" isn't a mentality, it's a way of life! Folks don't know what they're missing.

Won't sit at the range shooting a match with the larger rifles but I've never noticed the recoil shooting in the field as the game drops to the ground.

Personally, I'd go with the 340.

Buy the big one, put a big fish gill brake on it, and blow the roof off the shooting house.

People around here get way too hung up the practical. It needs to be fun. Blowing people's shit off the bench next to you with giant cannon is fun! Shooting little animals with giant guns is fun!

Both guns should go home with you!

I had a 340 and really liked it - if it was a little more accurate I’d still own it, and I’ll eventually own another. Recoil would be similar to your Ultra Mag with heavy bullets. It seemed about the same recoil as a 375 H&H.

I had a factory 30-378 and it wasn’t very accurate - those 120 gr loads of powder really contribute to recoil and muzzle brake blast, but the accuracy was the deal killer.

I’m excited about a 338 ultra mag barrel that is still on the UPS truck as we speak. Velocity wise it is 100 fps more than the 340, about equal to 338 Lapua, and only 100 to 150 fps behind the 338-378. I’ll probably load a little light to match a 340.

Sounds like you enjoy Weatherby rifles, so there’s no bad choice, although the 338-378 seems priced a little high unless it shoots really well - $1,200 would seem like a good deal.
