Any thoughts on 338 for smaller animals like Whitetail deer

Ive shot a pile of them with a 338 win mag. Works great with heavy bonded bullets.

Weatherby does not offer a short barrel .338 RPM in current production. I really liked the idea of the 18-20” but wonder what prompted the change.

I’ve killed a half dozen TX deer and probably 20 hog with a .338 Federal Kimber Montana chopped to 16”, Ballistic little brother. Just make sure your bullet design matches your ranges and impact velocities.

Not sure what you mean? Just bought a 338 RPM Backcountry 2.0 with the 18” (20” with brake). Plenty available new on Gunbroker. Same one user NONTYP is using. It is THE gun I’ve been searching for. Checks all the boxes.

I'm trying to decide between a 338 Lapua vs a 338 Weatherby RPM for an Alaskan hunting rifle...

Fierce Rage CT has a carbon fiber 338 Lapua that weighs around 6.1lb pounds.

What are the specific differences in felt recoil and bullet performance between the two? For a long range moose, elk or caribou rifle which bullet would have the advantage ?

I called WBY asking why the change, they said the barrell was too short, leaving too much unburned powder. Not sure why this was new info 3 years after release? But was also told I couldn’t order a 20” carbon either as BSF didn’t make a barrel for the 338RPM yet. But when I was looking into ordering a prefit 7mm backcountry I asked them why no 338 RPM and BSF said they have it in prefit for a mark 5 action. All seems weird and the only reason why I didn’t pull the trigger on one yet. I don’t want to buy an outlier cartridge then have Weatherby throw in the towel on it.

Lol, I cannot imagine a 6lb 338 lapua. It'd be just shy of 100lbs of recoil.

A 6lb 338 anything more than a federal isn't going to be even remotely shootable. The lapua would be over twice as worse than an unbraked 50bmg at average weights. I cannot think of a more worthless rifle.

I'm not sure how Fierce is or has made that carbon fiber 338 Lapua shootable. I don't know anyone who has one. Any reports on it ?
