I have not shot the heavy AMAX. I like them in 6.5 and 7mm, though. I run the 300 SMK because I bought cheap and stacked deep:) I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again.

Everybody else I know who shoots long is using the 300 Berger OTM now. There is a ballistic edge to them, no doubt, but the big SMK still gets the job done. There should be some data coming soon from guys like Broz and Shawn Carlock concerning kills with the Berger at ELR.

With the Sierras and the Bergers, sub-.25MOA accuracy is common and easy to load for in the Edge chambering with H1000. Some guys are using RL33 and N570 to up the velocity. I would be surprised if the AMAX doesn't shoot as well, but as you know, every barrel is different!

I bought a few boxes of the Berger 300gr bullets on sale, some of my buddies love the Lapua 250gr scenar in their 338 edge & RUM’s…but like you said , all barrels are different!

300 SMK removed from a very dead bull that caught it at 526 yards.

Use the 300 SMKs and you wont regret it. They hit like a small bus and completely take the animal off their feet.
Here is the video of my brother shooting his deer with an Edge at 680 yards. The video is kinda poor quality because it was a first light and I had to adjust the brightness on my computer. Regardless, you can see that the deer was dead before he heard the sound of the gunshot.

So I have a question,

What is wrong with building up a .338 Win Mag?

I take it all the mentioned calibers listed above beat it in performance.
Do they truely stomp this catridge or is it a slight edge in something new and exotic?

I am shooting 250 grain Bergers in my 338 WM. The difference between shooting a 250 Berger at 2650 fps and a 300 Berger at 3000 fps is huge.

Assuming both were zeroed at 200 in a 10 mph full value wind the 250 berger out of the 338 WM at 2650 would drift 65" (6.3 MOA) and drop 306" (29.2 MOA) at 1000 yards

A 338 Edge +P have roughly 3000 fps with a 300 berger in the same sight in and 10 mph full value wind would only drift 43"(4.1 MOA) and drop (20.4 MOA) at 1000 yard

And the advantage increases the further you shoot out.

I like to hike, explore, packraft too much to take the time to become proficient enough to warrant shooting at the distances that the big 338 offer the huge advantage so I'll stick with the WM. But for guys shooting across canyons there is a clear advantage indeed.

Note: All of this is theoretical and I've never shot long range before, this is purely regurgitated from what I've read and learned those that do shoot long range, those more in the know can probably unmuddy all this for you much better.

Like Luke stated. It is all about distance, drift and drop. The 338 WM is just fine when used within its limited range. But it is not a choice among the 338's that enjoys the advantages of the bigger 338 Magnums.

That makes sense,
Another question for you gentleman. How does a 338 edge compare to a .300 RUM? I know when it comes to bullet weights it is a bit of a moot point and certainly expect a .338 Edge to have an advantage. I am trying to place this round; most of what I have read has put .300 RUM heads and shoulders above a 300 Win mag.
I have never heard of some of these rounds till I joined Rokslide, so this is a bit of an eye opener for me, and kind of fun learning about new cartridges.

thanks

The 300 win will run a 215 Berger at 3000 from a 26" tube. The 300 Rum will run a 230 gr Berger at 3150 from a 28" tube. The 215 has a G1 BC of .696 the 230 .743. These are the bullets I feel are suited best for long range and the caliber mentioned. So you can see where the 300 RUM comes in with better long range ballistics. But I hunt with a 300 win and 215 Berger for anything I hunt including bull elk out to 1000 yards. Why?? Much better Barrel life and better brass.

Now, the .338 EDGE is a 300 RUM necked up to .338. So velocity will fall to 2800~2850, but it will be with a 300 gr bullet that has a .818 BC.far enough down range the 338 will retain more of its initial velocity than the 300 rum and the 338 EDGE will become the fastest, with less drift drop and also will arrive with more energy.

Is 338 EDGE or Lapua necessary for shots 1000 and less? Probably not, but it sure is nice in most applications. Past 1000? The 338 takes over and the farther you even more so.

Broz, what kinda barrel life will the 300 win get shooting the 215 vld @ 3000fps compared to the 300 rum with 28" barrel shooting the 215 vld?

Barrel life is dependent mostly on how hot they get. You can abuse a 300 RUM and shoot to many to quickly and kill the throat in 500 rounds, maybe less. But under normal conditions it is like this. You will probably start to see throat erosion on a 300 RUM that will result in some degree of accuracy loss in 700 rounds. But you will most likely shoot it till 1000 or 1200 before it will be bad enough to warrant changing the barrel.

The 300 win used under the same conditions I would say at least 3 times the barrel life of the 300 RUM. Maybe more. Now Tim North of Broughton Barrels has told me the 300 win will go way way past those estimates. I have yet to wear mine out so I cant say for sure. But I can tell you after 100's of 210's loaded to max and at least 300 215's loaded to max at 3035 fps. With a total round count well over 1000 my 300 win will still shoot clover leave 3 shot groups at 100 and an occasional ragged hole. And will still shoot .5 moa at 1200 plus. After owning both and some other big case 30 cals that is my best answer from first hand experience.
