Now, the .338 EDGE is a 300 RUM necked up to .338.

So adding to the mix, what is the difference between the two (.338 RUM and .338 Edge) if they both use a necked up .300 RUM as the parent case?

Jeff, when I am ready to build a .300 win mag I will be seeking your guidance on which way to go:)

Not Jeff, but the .300 Rum case is longer than the .338 RUM case. So it holds more powder.

The 300 win will run a 215 Berger at 3000 from a 26" tube. The 300 Rum will run a 230 gr Berger at 3150 from a 28" tube. The 215 has a G1 BC of .696 the 230 .743. These are the bullets I feel are suited best for long range and the caliber mentioned. So you can see where the 300 RUM comes in with better long range ballistics. But I hunt with a 300 win and 215 Berger for anything I hunt including bull elk out to 1000 yards. Why?? Much better Barrel life and better brass.

Now, the .338 EDGE is a 300 RUM necked up to .338. So velocity will fall to 2800~2850, but it will be with a 300 gr bullet that has a .818 BC.far enough down range the 338 will retain more of its initial velocity than the 300 rum and the 338 EDGE will become the fastest, with less drift drop and also will arrive with more energy.

Is 338 EDGE or Lapua necessary for shots 1000 and less? Probably not, but it sure is nice in most applications. Past 1000? The 338 takes over and the farther you even more so.

Jeff

I wonder if there is anything to be gained with a .300 win mag by going to a 28" or 30" barrel? I was wanting to build a long range 7mm rem mag, but now I'm thinking go big or go home. For me it's either a .300 win mag or just go all the way with a .338 edge. What is a .338 edge+P? Do you really need to state that you are loading to max pressures or is it a different case?

At this point in time, using factory production offerings the 30 cals will provide less drift and drop at longer distances. Simply due to the higher BC production bullet offerings like the 230 Berger with a true G1 BC of .743. The 7's with 180's may look better at shorter distances in some cases but at some point down range the 30 will be faster, have less drop and drift and will arrive with more energy. A good non wildcat comparison would be the 7mm Rem and the 300 Win. Load a 180 in the 7 and a 215 in the win and the win leads all the way. Go to bigger cases like the RUMs and down rage it again goes to the 30 at some point. Now I am several others are watching for the 7mm offering from Berger. If the proposed 195 gr 7mm bullet does hold to plan and bring with it a .796 BC I will be looking hard at rebarreling my 300 win to 7mm-300 win for this awesome BC in a mid caliber rifle. For now I am very happy though with my 300 win.

I like a 28" on both a 300 or a 7, plus the brake. But for sure a 30 would offer a little more velocity. Generally 20 fps / inch.

The +P is a patented chamber throat design from Defensive Edge. It allows a smoother transition from case to rifling and reduces the pressure spike while allowing larger charge weight and increased velocity.

As Jeff stated, the +P is a different throat design, allowing increased case capacity. With H1000, a standard load for the Edge is 90.0 grains for ~2800 fps. With the +P chambering, it will peak out around 98.0 grains before getting heavy pressure signs for ~2900 fps. The "+P" is not really +P like some pistol cartridges are, it's just the name Shawn chose for it.

IMO, if you want to go long and only want to invest in one rifle, 338 is the way to go. I never feel overgunned when shooting long at critters. There is a decisive difference between the big 7s or 30s, and the 338. They will all kill out to 800-1000 yards, but the big 300 grain bullets do it with authority and allow more range if desired.

Having said that, I like them all, and use them all at different times:cool:
