Thinking about building up a long range rifle in 338 variety, custom build. Thinking of these calibers as potential options
  • 338 Allen Express
  • 338 Khan
  • 338 terminator
what are your thoughts on these calibers in terms of sheer performance? Or should I be looking at another direction?

whats your components with a clean slate to work with to build up a precision purpose built rifle?

budget including optics is $10k. I’m partial to S&B PMII for glass.

I can’t speak to the calibers as the only 338 I have owned was just a 338 winmag. But for components I don’t think you can go wrong with a defiance action, manners or McMillan stock, proof research barrel and a quality trigger such as a trigger tech. Given the caliber I would also go with a good muzzle brake.

What’s the primary purpose of the rifle?

The 338 lapua improved cartridges (338ax, terminator, etc.) will give you better brass, and a belt less cartridge if that matters to you. The Kahn is based on the 338-378. Expect with Rl33 or N570 in a 28” barrel to see 2950-3000fps in the lapua Imp and 3000-3050 with the Kahn (300gr. Berger)
I’d consider the 33xc if planning on a single shot, for maximum performance on a standard size action. They will do upwards of 3200fps!

Shawn Carlock is the 338 guy. He would be at the top of my list to answer your questions & build me a $10000 rig. Good luck

How long of barrel? My 338 Lapua Imp shoots 300gr bergers with rl33 at 3060 with a 30in barrel. I run them in a mag, so could get more speed if I changed the freebore and single fed it. Do you need more than that? Lol. I’d go off the lapua based cartridge though.

I always thought that LRKM by Shawn carlock was a great idea if you want to be shooting over a mile! I don’t think I’ll ever have one but it does look cool 😎

I wonder if they make one with a carbon barrel?

The LRKM is what prompted me to get a desert tech. I think that makes more sense unless you are set on a proprietary chambering from carlock. With a DT you can shoot 223, 6.5 creed, 308, etc on the same platform and I bet the wait time for any barrel you desire (including carbon) is much shorter.

edit: also, you can mag feed a DTA and they are cheaper.

I have a LRKM in the 338 Terminator. I love mine. Please call Shawn over at Defensive Edge before you decide. This was a 100 yard group. 300 rounds down the pipe
