308win vs 6.5 CM - thoughts and questions

I’m up to a hair over max with W760, CCI primers, 24”barrel. I like W760 as it’s easy to find and works well in my WSM, CM.

I tried Varget but couldn’t find results I like.

My go to is 760 with 180 partitions, but trying out some 190s LRAB. I do not like LRAB in fast rounds, tried them in 26 Nos and not impressed on a goat, figure low/fat/slow should be good for that easier expansion.

My 308 (178 gr ELDX - commercial): 1585 fps and 993 ft-lbs @ 700
My 6.5 CM (129 gr ABLR - handload ): 1920 fps and 1055 ft-lbs @ 700
My 6.5 CM (147 gr ELDM - commercial): 1908 fps and 1189 ft-lbs @ 700

From an energy perspective, my 308 comes out ahead until 250 yards and then gets overtaken by my 6.5 CMs. It is in last place from a velocity perspective right out of the gate (by 168 fps and 382 fps).

I only keep my 308 due to it being lightweight (7# all in), easy to carry (20" barrel), and shoots commercial ammo sub-MOA (first three shots).

If in theory you could change your 6.5 scope to your 308 and remain on target, they are close enough to 500 yds to still hit the boiler room without adjusting.

Which ever one you choose will be fine. I personally like heavy slow bullets, too many blow ups on louden boomers magnums.

I'd venture to guess if a 308 is doing 2750 with a 150 and a creed is doing 2700 with a 143, the creed is running at higher pressure if both are using powders with the same level of velocity potential for each application.

That’s the fallacy, there is no best caliber. The best caliber would be your grandpas 30-06 he gave you with the extra $20,000 in guns/optics invested in retirement for 45 years, but that’s not happening haha. There’s hardly a lick of difference between any non-Magnum calibers unless you are shooting WAY out there.

A very accomplished hunter on another forum said it best.

"Those who place their shots, sharpen their knife after they shoot. Those who don't, lace up their tracking boots."

No merry go round about different cartridges. I've had to learn this the hard way a few times.

Having said that, I certainly appreciate my 6.5 Creedmoor. Not because it's the Hammer of Thor, but because I can shoot it 50 times in a session without building bad habits. If you can shoot a bigger rifle that much without it messing with your fundamentals, well, great!
