Assuming that a 308 +peak offering is on the horizon, how would you all build a hunting rifle to take full advantage? Having a few 308's already and a pile of ammo, it would be great to have a handy rifle that works well with standard-pressure 308 and also +peak. The purpose would be hunting suppressed.

  • What would be the optimal barrel length?
  • Should the twist speed up?
  • Are there actions you would avoid, or do you expect the case to do the work the case advertises?

Terminus Zeus action, Proof Research 22 inch 1 in 10 twist 22 inch carbon fiber barrel. Manners EH 1 stock. Already have the rifle that was built by Short Action Customs.

Fingers crossed it'll be plug-n-play in my 16" criterion AR-10 (probably with some gas block tuning). I am stupid hyped and hoping they release it with some 168 TTSX because my barrel is sub MOA with those currently.

If i could, I'd do a suppressed 16-18in tikka with a proof carbon barrel in a mdt hnt26 topped with a 2-12 nx6 f1.

I read that Tikka is saying not to use the Peak ammo in their actions. Somethung about them not testing their actions to that pressure. Not sure if it's true.

Has there been anything to indicate that .308win is the next offering??

They did 7mm and 6.5mm I think stepping up to a .30cal is logical... or do they run it down to 6mm or .25 now that it is gaining popularity?

Would a .30/06 or 300wsm +peak kill off the 300prc?

I think Backfire did an interview with two reps from Tikka, and they could not give a clear answer on +peak in their actions. Seemed like they were caught between what they wanted to say and what would get them in trouble with the European SAMMI (CIP)

For what it's worth, the rifles used in this video were Tikkas and I didn't notice them having any pressure signs.

OP, I'm not sure if .308 is on the horizon. They seem nervous about older actions and .308 might open up a pandora's box of older guns that have issues due to the increased pressure. I think 6CM being next is more likely.

Tikka can't say "go ahead" because they are governed by CIP. CIP, unlike SAAMI, is not voluntary. Until a cartridge is approved by CIP, and tested in high pressure tests (30% over spec) they literally cannot say anything about it being fine.

They do say that they test 6.5 creed at 80k psi as part of their high pressure tests, and they pass, soooo.....

Getting back to 308, I think 6.5 +peak is the trial. If nobody blows anything up for a few years, and the data starts to pile up re: pressure vs bolt thrust with steel casings, they will roll it out.

They said they haven't tested it so until they do, its a bit of a grey area for them.
They like to do extensive testing of their own.

According to what I've seen from federal, they're saying that the action sees no more pressure than standard brass ammo. The case itself handles the pressure apparently.

Itll be interesting to see how it goes, but it would be hard to imagine that they'd lie about it and launch a product that would potentially create hundreds of thousands of liability cases.
I could be very wrong, but I can't see it happening.
