With the ammo made today a 308 will do just fine with normal hunting ranges and if you already have a 7mm it wouldn’t hurt to have a light short action in the safe as well

I just sold my 300wm and used the funds for mods to my 308. It depends on your hunting style.

My style is to practice shooting a lot in the off season, then spend hunting season walking around carrying my rifle and not encountering any elk. For my purposes, the 308 was the better choice.

If it were me I'd buy a 300 WSM! It hardly kicks and is a great caliber for just about all big game. An added plus to buying something a little different than your other rifle is you can use it on other big game hunts where you may want to lug around a hefty 300 win? I would suggest looking at a 300 WSM in a Sako Finnlight that would be a super rifle for sheep and goat hunting. I use the same rifle for deer, elk, bear, sheep, mtn goat, and other big game!
