I shot 2 cows a bull and a deer with 180 partitions at 2630 mv in the last 2 years. All 4 animals were between 340 and 440 yards. All 3 elk soaked up multiple rounds before expiring. All 6 of the bullets passed through (some through shoulder blades/elbows) with about a thumb sized exit. I like the penetration of the 180 partition but it does leave me wanting for a little more internal damage.

Since the area we now hunt is prone to cross valley shots, I may switch to a 165-168 cup/core bullet in the future. Honestly, at .308 velocities I’m learning you probably can’t go wrong with most traditional cup and core bullets in the 165-180 range.

We just tagged a 5x and a 6x both with 308. I was shooting a 168 TMK and buddy was shooting factory Atips.

I’m looking to start testing some loads for an elk hunt next year in Montana, but have been going in circles reading forums all over the internet. It seems like I’ll seem to come to a common consensus only to be convinced otherwise a few threads later. So, I figured I’d ask it here.

The situation:

- potential range up to 400 yards, most likely 300
- rifle is a Winchester model 70 extreme weather MB
- shooting suppressed

What I’m working with:

- I currently have a few different powders, but probably will land on imr4064 or TAC (don’t have varget or RL15)
- standard federal LRP
- Hornady new brass

Not sure if I should go 165 or 180gr, and even what bullet to go with. Im ok buying a couple more options to test out, but I have Sierra 165gr gamekings and 180gr Hornady Interlock.

I’ve been seeing recommendations for Accubond, Partition, and TTSX, but also seeing people recommend against them due to velocity etc.

What bullets are successful against elk at .308 velocities out to 400 yards?

I'd get a box of TTSX's in 150gn, 168gn and 175gn LRX bullets and see which the rifle prefers. Then stock up and you are done for anything in the US for the life of the barrel.

400 yards and a .308? Use whatever you want that shoots accurately. The differences between bullets at that range are inconsequential.
