300wsm or 338rcm?

For Alaska I left my 340 wby at home and took my 300wsm with Barnes 175 grain pills...incredible penetration after going through heavy bone. It would be a great test to see both in a ballistics gel penetration& expansion test to see what outperformed...I think they'd be quite equal.
Look what Luke Moffat totes around for bears most of the time.

Destruction of flesh is what kills animals and you're going to get more with a broader and heavier bullet from a .338.

Luke has a very lightweight 338/06 and an even lighter weight 358 Winchester if I recall correctly ?

He may be now as he changes it up alot but my point was he generally had small caliber 260, 308 stuff most of the time.
And to damage....plenty of proof that smaller cals at higher velocity and the right bullet can create more damage than a larger caliber...
A .030" bigger diameter doesn't mean anything...it's level of penetration and the diameter of the expanded bullet that matters. Maybe the 338 rcm is very slightly better...maybe not at all. I have both and if I was to advise OP it would certainly be the 300wsm just from more options in guns and bullet choices. Ultimately I'd run a 375 Ruger for strictly a bear hunt.

He's wanting a semi-custom, so rifle selection is irrelevant; he also reloads so factory ammo is kind of irrelevant too. Lots of .338 bullet choices as well. I've pushed 230gr eld-x bullets to 2825 out of my RCM with about .75moa accuracy (and a sticky bolt), so it's not like I cant push some smaller bullets at higher velocity if I want to "Weatherby" something at close range.

Luke actually baptized my custom RCM with holy moose blood upon its completion...he's probably heard more about this damn RCM than he cared to.

Lots of good info. Leaning RCM but have pondered a 338-06 too. Downside to the 300wsm is to get the performance you have to go with a longer action

338/06 is a good route too, of which Luke Moffat can also attest. You can outrun a 24" 338/06 by a margin in a short action and 20" barrel with the RCM, though. Which is another reason I went RCM. I'm getting such good velocities out of my 20" I'm contemplating cutting it down to 18" or 16" and running a suppressor.

Grip and rip. Not a bear I have seen killed is gonna like a 30-30 nor a 416 Barrett through the vitals.

More and more I’m becoming a simpleton on many level. But don’t take my word for it there are many here with much more experience than myself certainly.
When are we going to get the laser guns? Then we can debate photon saturation and pulse rates.
