300win or 7 prc

new rifles are fun. I think we call all agree on that.

I’m in the camp that your .308 is plenty. Right bullet, right spot.

7 PRC over the 300 WM. Lots of ammo available now, less kick, better BC, less wind deflection.

If you were reloading and could get brass I'd go 7 SAUM... or take a long look at 280 AI.

7 PRC….check the 180 Berger Hybrid. I have a 6.5 PRC and shoot 140 burgers. The 7 PRC in my case has the same down range trajectory as the lighter bullet in the 6.5. May change a bit at 900 yards and of course 7 bullet retains more energy. The PRC’s I own are super accurate and I think that’s a common theme. I went thru same debate as you but I was considering a 300 PRC.

I would say, find the rifle you like, buy it in .300 win., 7Rem Mag, or even the old .280 Remington. A 1970's or early 1980's Remington 700 with that beautiful wood in a 7 rem mag, whew.

You’re honestly probably fine with the .308 or .270, but for the new options you listed, you could flip a coin and be good either way. Just use a good bullet.

I shot a black bear at 370 yards this year in Idaho with 170 gr terminal ascent chambered in 7mm prc from a bergara sierra wilderness. That put the hurt on it, it went about 15 yards and piled up on the edge of a cliff. Kept shooting to prevent it from going over the side but I don’t believe it was needed. I shot a whitetail at 354 yards with the 7 prc in Pennsylvania behind my house in the field. Maybe ran 50 yards and that was exasperated by the fact she was going downhill. I shot another doe with the 7prc in Pennsylvania at 60 yards with an eld x and that was a mess. I ditched them because I have opportunities that are bow range close sometimes and they don’t seem to like that. I also shot a caribou at 150 yards with a 300 win mag with a hornady 165 gr SST. Dead on its feet. Fell over after a few minutes, only reason I didn’t shoot it again was because I was 14 at the time and in shock. I give this experience to say I love both cartridges and you will be pleased with either. The 7 prc is nifty, and mine can shoot a MOA group if I do my part with either of the loads I have tried.

The 300 has been killing critters for decades. Try and find WSM ammo of any flavor on a store shelf right now. Thats what PRC ammo selection will probably be 10 years down the road.
I used to agree with this logic and say the same thing to my buddies. But with the ability to find just about any ammo online now, I’m not sure it matters anymore

We have either used, or guided for, shooters using the 7 PRC and the 300 WM on everything from woodchucks to water buffs. Everything terminal the 300 WM can do the 7 PRC can do with less recoil, rifle weight (though not by much), muzzle blast, and sometimes barrel length.
If it is in a new rifle, I'd go 7 PRC 8 days a week over 300 WM.
Now if it has to be a 300 of some type then I'd grab a 300 PRC to throw those 225+ pills.
For what it is worth, for my uses I went 6.5 PRC and 300 PRC as my two "big" hunting rifles.

I think that you would be better served by - wait for it - a can on your big rifle and a 223 trainer that matches it to get in some high volume yet cheap reps. No surprise on that being the answer here on Rokslide though...
