Looking for input on a .300 win mag under 600, bare gun. Majority of my time is spent on archery so im not a big gun expert and im not looking to shoot further than 3-400 yards tops. Thanks for any input!

I have a weatherby s2 in 300 win mag that fits in that category, and I honestly love that gun. A little heavy compared to some others but I trust it and it has never let me down. Also I do not shoot farther than 500 yds.

Tikka, Weatherby Vanguard, Sauer 100, Mauser M18, Bergara B14 Hunter. All at or under that price and all nice rifles.

Man I think you could get by with a rem 700 bdl and be happy with it if you arent shooting it that often. I went that route then started to out together some YouTube videos on shooting it long range on a budget. Then I blew the budget part up by tossing a chassis on it haha but it was plenty decent gun and shot good factory off the shelf groups.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Tikka or Bergara B-14. I don't have first hand experience with the others but do with both those. Just throwing it out there, I won a 300 win mag browning x bolt at an SCI Auction on Saturday. I don't have a use for it (my CA Ridgeline is the workhorse), I saw your $600 budget. This rifle would be right in your wheelhouse. Let me know if you have any interest or want pics.

That's a lot of gun for an occasional shooter especially if you are only stretching out to 400 yards. I'd be careful not to go too light (sub 8lbs) or get one with a brake.....but then you're stuck wearing ear plugs.

Just interested in your caliber choice if you're only going to be shooting sub 400 yards. I would think the magnum is not needed and you'd be fine with a 30-06 or maybe even 308 depending on your needs. But I always like to be as light as I can be (and a light 300 WM is no fun).

Having said that, I agree with rootacres in that you should check out the Bergara hunter and a Tikka t3x (I would get the stainless version if I got a Tikka). I have a Bergara hunter in 30-06 and a buddy of mine has a Tikka t3x stainless lite in 308 and they are both great rifles. I must also say my first hunting rifle was a Savage 111 FCNS in 270 and that gun was great to me. Nowadays there are so many options for great value rifles that will be able to shoot better than you can (or maybe that's just true for me lol)

That tikka will just about require a brake or be prepared for an ugly flinch.

I agree. If you are set on getting a 300 WM, I would consider something heavier (like the bergara mentioned) unless you are confident that you will be able to handle the recoil. It doesn't matter how fast/heavy of a bullet you're shooting if you miss the target

Does it need to be new could keep a eye on arms list and be patient

I know where there is a Savage 116 Bear Hunter with a low round count fine shooting X-Caliber threaded barrel on it that would meet your specs.

I just saw a NIB Xbolt listed in the classifieds for $650 shipped. Thats a pretty good deal for a great rifle!

I’m in the same boat here. I’m primarily an archery hunter and have only taken a handful of whitetails with a gun over the years. An impending moose hunt this fall though has a rifle on my list and a .300 win mag is what I’m after.

I had kind of settled on a Ruger American, but they seem to be going away in that caliber, so now I’m also looking at other brands in the price range.

The TC Venture is hard to beat for the price and can be had for around $500 with the weathershield. That 5R rifling makes them easy to clean and I have had 3 of them over the years and all were easily under MOA.

I picked up an Browning A Bolt 3 stalker - 26" barrels in 300 Win Mag haven't finished break in yet but it shoots well so far on my 100 yrd range will be testing on 200 later this week if weather holds out, recoil was not as bad as I expected, trigger feels crisp - Update did some 400 yd. shooting had a 2" group (3 shot) and put a few in the center ring even adj for wind, three others picked up the same gun and did the trigger springs as well all shoot very good at a distance, going to be a great Elk season if the fires don't interrupt things

I can't speak for the 300wm version but my 6.5CM is scary accurate even with rapid strings of rounds going down the pipe. I was going to recommend the same gun. Also it is a lot more refined feeling than my friend's XPR, but the XPR still seems nice enough.
