300 Win Mag - Best Mountain Rifle

I’ll second the M70 stainless classic in a Mcmillan edge or as another option a LAW Professional. I have one in 300 win mag and while it’s not super light, it’s comfortable to shoot and pretty bomb proof. Topped it with a 3-10 SHV in nightforce ultralights and called it good. Factory threaded for a brake too and uses an Ed Brown 704 CRF action.

I have a ca Mesa in 300 win that I absolutely love. It shoots very good and I don’t claim to be the best shooter. Fit and finish is good, feels good, tt trigger. The only small complain I have is the bolt lift is fairly heavy.

I think I’m going this direction.

Not a 300 but I really like my Sako 85 Finnlight 7mm Rem Mag. Paid $1250 for it new. Never had a single ejection issue with it using their low ring mounts

Burris Veracity 3-15 X 50 (30mm)

Savage Model 110 hunter and use the money saved on a suppressor. Elk won’t know it’s a $500 gun and it’s more accurate than I am. Silencerco Harvester suppressor will knock the recoil in half and your guide will thank you for not destroying his hearing with a muzzle break.

My $500 savage is sub moa with factory rounds. I expect that out of a $1200 rifle too.

I will tell hat ain’t a sub moa rifle for that price - a Remington American wilderness Rilfe. $1000 for the rifle and $200 for a trigger swap and it still isn’t as good a shooter as my tikka for half the price.

I was looking at the same rifles mentioned and ended up going with a used Savage Long Range Hunter. Guy I bought it from supplied all the load data - so I even saved a ton on the load development😀

Its really hard to argue with a T3X superlite. Take the cash you save and thread it for a break. My dad bought one and took it out to 700 yds with factory ammo. Im shocked how good it shoots. Also a Christensen Arms Mesa in 300 WM would be a great option. It comes with a break and is priced well. My brother has a CA Mesa in 308 and I have a CA Ridgeline in 300 WSM. The 308 likes Hornady ELD-X and my 300 WSM likes Accubonds. Both are dime droppers.

Tough to argue with a 300 win mag for an all around setup. I had a Remington 700 bedded in an hs precision stock and a brake that would shoot 168 ttsx and 200 accubonds into varmint rifle size groups however a lightish 300 will really bark and isn’t really all that fun to shoot. At the end of the day I sold it and basically just run a 308 for everything and get closer. A 300 is a great all a rounder if you like the recoil.

Bergara B14 in a ridge or a premiere series in the their mountain rifle. Both will be a lil heavier than most rifles and fits your budget. Both are threaded but honestly a brake on a hunting rifle for me is a 110% no go! I blew my ear drums out last year shooting a brake on a kimber mountain assent in 280ai. My ears are still ringing and unless you wear some sort of ear plug while hunting, a brake will level your ears as well.

These bergara rifles are uncanny accurate.

Yup. Breaks are a no-no. Our camp simply doesn’t allow anyone to hunt with us who thinks he has to have one.

Throw these around your neck - they take two seconds to throw on. Why would you not allow someone to hunt with a break? If it makes you a better marksmen and a more ethical hunter - I’m all for it. ‘Tough guy rules’ are stupid.

My garden variety model 700 rings steel at 1000 yards, works for me but i did have to tame it with an aftermarket buttpad, a brake on the barrel and switched the trigger to Timney.
