300 win mag ammo

I picked up bergara 300 win mag for no other reason than I thought it was cool. I'd like to use it here and there. Think I'd like to shoot 150g ammo?? What are you guys using for a good round for deer possibly elk? I see price on 300 ammo is icky!

Take a look a norma whitetail 150 gr. Cheap and norma brass is good if you reload. I bought a few boxes just for the brass.

On the performance side, they seem, to do decent. I had a buddy shoot a decent mule deer with them and they did pretty well.

Lucky for me my 300 likes cheap corlokts. Might be worth getting a box of cheap stuff to see if it works well. 180 grains have taken down deer, moose and caribou. I dont switch up weight of bullets for the critters i am after. I am not a bullet wizard like some on this site and go for more the KISS method. Find a bullet at a weight that will work for all your critters and get a couple different boxes and see what kind groups well.

Personally I go up to a 180 for 300WM just because I don't want a grenade going off in short range shots.

Sample of one, but 300 ammo is still a bit scarce around me. I recently bought a tikka 300 and put a scope on it. I wanted to get it zeroed for a late season elk hunt and couldn’t find a lot of variety Locally. I ended up with Winchester super X 180s from Walmart being the only thing I could get more than a couple of boxes Before my hunt. I will try out some different brands and bullet weights next year but for now I have decent groups and zeroes to 400 yards.

I like the 200g partition form a 300win mag. I’d go as low as 165/168 if I was shooting a pure copper bullet but even then, I’d probably go with a 180.

I took a nice south Texas whitetail with the Norma 150s. I think 150s are too light for elk… except maybe the 150 TTSX.

I’ve switched to the 200 ELD-X for a more all-around and elk-capable bullet.

If I was going to stick with lightweight bullets in the 300, I’d stick with mono-metal. Most of the 150s I see available are soft bullets that will be marginal for elk.

Like others have said, you’ll find the best performance out of a heavier bullet. When I run out of the ELD-X I’m gonna go to the 185 Berger.

The 165g stuff I load for my 300 win mag is still moving close to 2800fps at 200yds. It would absolutely kill an elk or moose at that distance, easily.

The 200 Eld-X do fine with a 10-1 twist and are very accurate. They hammer elk. I have switched to the 190 ABLR when I can find them, they seem about perfect, but they are apparently made of unobtainium currently. Ballistics of the 2 are very close, definitely minute of elk under 500 yards. Just picked up some 225 Eld-m to develop a load for, and the box specifies a 10-1 twist, so at least to the manufacturer, 200 should be well within a 10-1s ability to stabilize.

Im a huge fan of Nosler’s Trophy Grade 180 gr Accubonds. At 500 yards its still 2000+ fps and 1700+ ft-lbs. Pricey stuff, but worth it

I also have a Bergara in .300 win mag. It shoots 200 grain federal terminal ascent phenomenally. And boy howdy will they knock the hell out of a mule deer.

I use nosler 180gr. Rifles loves it but my wallet does not.

I hunt western game extensively with the 300and have for years . I use a 190 grain lrx or 200 grain terminal ascents (and trophy bonded tips before them) for most jobs, antelope to mule deer to bull elk. If I want to really reach out and touch something with a more frangible bullet, the 200 gr eldx or, my fav, the 215 bergers. I've never had a desire to shoot 150s in a win mag. I have a 308 for that and even then I only go their light with 150 Barnes TTSX because my rifle won't shoot the 168s.

Never had an issue. I run up to 215 bergers on my 300s and they stabilize just fine. One of the great things about 30 cals is the wide range of bullet weights that seem to stabilize in the 1 in 10 rifles IMHO.

As far as knocking elk down at 200, my husband runs 150 grain partitions in a 270 win and has taken all of his elk with this rifle no problem. Bullet selection and shot placement. I live in CO and most people I know actually don't shoot magnums for elk. I'm an exception.

215 Bergers are supposed to be the ticket for Elk. I see no reason to shoot a 300
Win Mag with light weight cup/core bullets.

Looking to build a round with the 200 ELDx for my mg lite 300. What kind of powder are you finding the best results with?
