Technically the .300RUM is a little flatter than the .388RUM, but like Luke, I like mass..... AND speed.

Brandon,
IF your .338 has a 26" barrel I'd ream it out to .338RUM.
I built my .338Ultra (RUM) back in 2000 right after Remington announced the .338RUM.
At the time I was contemplating the .330Dakota as my next elk rifle and had already acquired a 26" Browning A-Bolt in .338Win for the project. So it was an easy switch to the non-wildcat factory .338Ultra for me.
So I order a .338RUM reamer & gages, machined a DIY reamer extension and hand reamed it myself. I used the same extension on a Rem700 so I suppose the same extension would work for both actions. I've been killing stuff w/ it ever since. 3-4 bear, several elk and a few un-lucky coyotes.

IMO, the ballistics between the .388Lapua and .338Ultra are so similar that arguing about pro/cons is pointless, they are twins. But that fact that any std .338Win Mag rifle can be reamed out to .338Ultra w/o any action mods is attractive. Sure you have simple magazine mods, but that isn't a real big deal.

Anyway I love my .338Ultra. I call it Thor for obvious reasons.

I had a 300 RUM for about 10 years, used it on atelope, deer and elk. When the barrel started to go, I had it rebarred to 338 RUM. It is a good shooter with 300 gr SMKs or Accubonds. That being said, I also have a 338 WM that has seen more field time and killed whitetails to wild bison.

Brandon,

Out of all of my rifles, if I could only keep one it would be the 338 WM.
