3 Pin Slider: Pin Setup w/ Trick Pin

Hey guys,

I'm setting up my 3 Pin slider for the Trick Pin method with my pins at X, 40, & 50. I would like the Trick Pin to be on the bottom for ease of acquisition and to also serve as my slider. I'm also pretty set on the 40 pin so that I can gap shoot where the Trick Pin runs out of range in the lower 40's. What I'm trying to determine is what should my top pin be?

With the Trick Pin, I should be good for anywhere between 10-42 yds (and also for the super close <5 yd shots on a dead on hold). 40 Pin will allow me to shoot from 40-50 (using the 50 as a dead on hold at 50yds of course). So, I can either go with 20, 25, or 30 for the top pin. I'm leaning toward 20 to keep my pins spaced out and also because I can choose to use it dead on if I want/or the situation dictates...but it's sort of redundant with the Trick Pin.

I'm trying not to overthink this, but want to hear you guys' thoughts...

What's your arrow speed?

I'm about 3" high at 20 yards when I used my 30 yard pin (around 290 fps)

You could try for 25-27 yards for your first pin...

My floater pin is the bottom one for me. Bow speed doesn't matter really, what does is figuring out the "ballistics" of your bow. Once that is figured out, you can adjust your sight bracket up and down with the sliding device and all pins change accordingly. So, you can have a 30, 40, 50 pin sight in and range them from 10 to whatever the max would be.

I have struggled with this exact same question since learning the trick pin technique. Ultimately I am going to practice next year with a two pin set up. Thus keeping the sight picture as clean as possible above the trick pin (50 yd). Since the trick pin relies upon you being able to judge a foot below the targeted location on the animal, a clear sight picture above the trick pin would seem crucial to being able to effectively aim. Once I am proficient at the trick pin out to my maximum range based on the ballistics of my bow/arrow setup (43 yards), I am going to adjust my aiming point based on keeping the arrow within the kill zone for that select distance interval. So this may require me to aim at the bottom of the chest/heart on a deer (based on OnTarget2 simulations). That should be as accurate for hitting the kill zone as gap shooting. Then I will use an additional pin at 60 yards and as a floater. Anything beyond 60 yards I will have to range find and adjust the floater for an accurate shot anyways.

Let us know what you find works the best for you. I'm not going to experiment with my hunting rig till the off season.

Here is the article again.

Try shooting at different yardages using tape to measure the trajectory of your arrow. Take those measurements and find the distance(s) where the top arc of your arrow measures the same gap as the bottom impact point. I think with around your speed of 280 ft./s you"ll find it to be somewhere around 45-50 yards.

For example: at 45 yards, your arrow will impact dead center bull's-eye. At 50 yards - 5" low & 40 yards 5" high.

BSeals,

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying but are you sure on those numbers?

I don't know what speed Cooper's bow was shooting for that article, but let's assume it's somewhere around 280. His trajectory graph gives the following (with a 52 yd trick pin):

3" lower than POI @ ~10yds
POI @ ~14yds
3" higher than POI @ ~26yds
POI @ ~38yds
3" lower than POI @ 42.5yds
*POI is 12" higher than POA

This gives a trick pin effective range from 10 - 42.5 yds.

Were you talking about something different?

Yeah I've thought about going to two pins as well, but after reading the thread associated with Coopers article, there is apparently a couple benefits to having additional pins...espicially set for yardages shorter than your trick pin. I've shot out to 100 before with a 20/30/40 slider setup and I figure that if I can shoot well enough with that sight picture, then I should be ok with pins in my view above my trick pin. The easy part is that for elk, you just aim at the bottom of the chest with your trick pin. I may go with the 25yd suggestion for the top pin, but I'm still working on it.

Thanks so far for all the suggestions guys.

Can you expand on the potential benefits of the shorter pin(s) above the magic pin?
