Hey guys... biting the bullet and swapping my single pin tommy for a 3 pin tommy.

what yardages do you guys use?

I planned on going 30-40-50, but i wonder if these are going to be pretty close together. I thought about going 20-35-50, because I always set my single pin sight at 35 and aim high low out to 45.... I dont want to spread them too much or else it defeats the purpose. I am comfortable shooting out to 45 with a 35 pin. With a 50 i could just aim a few low for 45 instead of a 16 inch hold over like i am doing now. that would spread them out a bit and for some reason i HATE aiming 4 inches low on a close target, so having a 20 would be nice.

what do you guys use?

25-40-50 is what I have decided on. Tried 20-30-40, 30-40-50 and even 35-50-60. For me, 25-40-50 covers what I want it to cover, with the ability to go longer.

for some reason I like even yardage gaps hahaha. I dont know why. I know with my current set up the difference between 25 and 30 is only about 1.5 inches. My guess is that i am mostly debating 30-40-50 vs 20-35-50.

I shot a 5 pin Tommy for a few years, then switched over to a single pin Hogg Father. If I shot 3 pins, it would probably be 20, 30, 40. Anything beyond that and you should have time to range and adjust.

This will be for every species I hunt... antelope to moose. I like the 20-30-40 idea, but to be honest if I do that I would just stick with 1 pin. I set at 35 and I am 3.5 high at 20 and 4.5 low at 40... woulnt be worth the hassle.

I agree that anything over 40 should be able to be ranged and moved... but , like I said, I still have the fear regarding drawing at 40, the game moving to 60, and me not being able to let down to move it. I am not comfortable shooting 60 with my 40. I figure 60 with my 50 should be much more practical especially with some practice.

I understand that, and I was an even yardage setter for years. No problem at 20-30-40 for blind/stand hunting, but was lacking for on the go stuff. With my hunting bows (all shooting between 280-290 fps with 500+gr arrows) the 25-40-50 setting was what I found to be the best for me. the gap between 25 and 40 is pretty close to the gap between 4- and 50, so it eases my overly A-type mind. With those settings and gaps, I can cover from 0 to 55+ without moving anything. 20-3-40, was IMO a waste of a pin. I didn't like 30-40-50 because of the perceived pin gaps (A-type mind) and control issues with the shots from 20 and in. Whether a 25 pin over a 30 makes much practical difference ended up being irrelevant to my freakish control A-type mind. It was easier to get used to the odd number.

Here's my plan I just ordered a slider and went with a 3 pin But plan to remove one once I figure out which color i like on bottom. My astigmasism causes my pins to blur and when they are too close they blur together .. so I'm going to have a 25 and a 40or 45 pin depending on my drop. it should give my the unclutterd site with no pin blur I'm hoping for either that or I just wizzed away $200

Always went 30-40-50 on a 3 pin. Easy to remember and I was covered from 0-55 if something happened fast. Then I could range and slide for anything after that.

20-30-40

I would say 90 percent of my shots have come inside that range. if its any longer ive got time to range,i understand the trick pin system and know a lot of guys are successful with it, its just nor for me. when I pick a spot I want to hit that exact spot, not somewhere around that spot.

It would depend on the bow and how fast it was shooting. For an average bow in the 280-290 range Id go 20-30-40. For a bow shooting at 300 or faster Id go 30-40-50.

Out west I run 30-40-50 but my tape goes up. Last year I could run indicator at 40 ( 20-30-40) for turkey and tree stand and slide it to 50 ( 30-40-50 ) out west and was ok

I did the 30, 40, 50 thing and practiced like crazy out to 80. Ended up shooting my muley at 18 yards, and shot him high. I got lucky and killed him, but much higher shot than I liked. When you have a muley buck walking right at you, and your afraid of getting run over, you forget about aiming low at 20. Remember more people practice and harvest game at 20 yards than other yardages; it a staple. 20, 30, 40 is my vote!
