I am looking to build a Tikka in .277 with a 20" barrel. I thought I was gonna hit the easy button in a 6.8 western chambering. However, it appears that I may be able to get another 150 FPS +/- in .270 WSM throated long to shoot the heavies (berger 170 or 165 ALBR) and of course with a fast twist barrel. I read .220 freebore might be good but apparently I just can't specify the freebore and the barrel maker (Carbon 6) requires 3 dummy rounds.
I don't really want to buy dies and brass yet with a 6 month lead time on the barrel. Anyone who may be shooting either 165 ALBR or 170 grain elite hunter willing to make 3 dummy rounds? Happy to pay for components and shipping. Thank you in advance.
Also looking for any feedback from those who may have traveled this path already. Is it even worth it? Am I on a fools errand chasing diminishing returns? Am I wrong and the real difference is only 50fps? Don't plan to shoot factory ammo but I guess it's a plus.
