I've had a 6.8 Western for 3 seasons now. I use it for everything from Pronghorn up to Elk with 175gr Sierra TGK handloads. 3 Elk, 4 Pronghorn and 5 Mulies between myself and my kids. Shot distances from 40yds to 500yds on elk. Very mild recoil with a brake, just gotta make sure ears are protected.

There's a guy on the hammer and long range hunting forms shooting a .270 win with .290 freebore and a 27" barrel. He's getting 3200 fps with the 156gr hammer hunters. Search for"thors hammer" and you should be able to find it.

I just had a similar .270 with a long throat 23" barrel built last week after seeing his results. I'm starting with the 140gr .650 bc badlands bulldozer. For clarity I live in a lead free state or id personally go with a short action 6 or 6.5 cartridge

When the 7PRC came out shortly after the 6.8W, I was willing to put money on the 6.8W being a goner. Here we are a few years later, and I broke down and got a rifle chambered in 6.8W. I spoke to a Barnes rep and they have told me, their 155gr LRX was designed for the 6.8W, also said that once they have the brass issue sorted they will be loading for the 6.8W. This past spring I was able to talk to a couple of hunters while on a spring bear hunt out west, and quite a few of them toted the 6.8W and loved their choice.

I have two x-bolt 6.8 westerns. A long range pro and a Mountain Pro. Mainly using 151 grain Hammer HHT with good accuracy and about 3300 fps. I was planning to take my 300PRC to Alaska this September for Caribou but now I'm thinking about taking the 6.8 Western. If you get one, you can get onto a waitlist for ADG brass in 6.8 Western which should be out the first quarter of 2025. I'm currently using weight sorted Winchester brass and it works fine.
Update: Went to the range again to try my 3300 fps load of 151 HHT and maybe my new barrel speed up a bit but velocity creeped slight higher and I was getting fail to extract and heavy bolt lift so I'm going to have to tame that load to lower pressure. Probably drop 1/2 grain of the Ramshot Grand powder and aim for 3250. My load with 160 HHT did not have any extraction issues.
