Hi I’m new to the forum, first post. I am going to try the 165 gr accubond long range in my tikka 270 wsm. I know the stability is marginal. I’ve seen a few places where people have tried them with some luck on a 1:10 twist. I’m planning to start with h1000.
I would think 6.8 western would give a real good idea for a starting point but I can’t find much for that either. Does anyone else have experience with this combination? Any suggestions? Thanks

Also I have calculated these 165 ablr at 1.51” long and a .125 ballistic tip have a stability of 1.25 at sea level and 1.47 at 4500 feet and 45°. Is that going to be good enough?

Can’t say if it will be good or not. What I’d suggest is that you want a stable bullet when it hits an animal. Punching paper or ringing steel doesn’t really tell you the full story. I get it…super heavy bullets are in right now, but I’d personally not choose a bullet that was just marginally stable. Maybe 130-150 grain? Despite what the internet will tell you the lighter bullets will still reliably shoot just fine out to extended ranges. Or get a 1:8 barrel.

No experience. But I have question. Why 165 vs 150 or 140? Is it just the challenge, seeing if you can make it work?

Why do I want to try the heavy for caliber bullets in my 270wsm? I’ve been a bit frustrated with .270 cal projectile offerings and the lower BC compared to the latest BC trends in the other more popular calipers. Years ago a lot of 10 twist 270 guys were running the matrix 165 and seemed to have really good results from my reading. That option is off the table now but we have the ablr 165. I’m wanting to reBarrel to something in 6.5 or 7 but thought I’d give these a try for the time being. It’s definitely a want not a need. With the Berger stability calculator some of there bullets come in at less that 1.5 sg at their recommended twist which got me thinking about it. I will also mention I’ve been hearing about some weird deflection during terminal performance with monos. Probably something to do with the mentioned good groups but not stable enough for adequate terminal performance.

Also where I the conditions would put the 165 into the 1.5 sg range.

I used 270WSM data to narrow in on a good 6.8W recipe. In my experience, the 270WSM data is very similar to 6.8W. Both Hodgdon and Shooters Reference both have 6.8W load data for 6.8W and the 165ABLR. The 270WSM should have a little more case capacity than the 6.8. So I'd use the 6.8W data to work up to max load then back off once you see pressure signs.

Most folks have had very good luck with H4831SC, including myself.

Thanks for that Yak, I didn’t know about shooters reference. I see There’s a lot of loads there for the 6.8w. That give me a good starting point

Give it a try and let us know how it goes. I gave seen 2 or 3 youtube videos including penetration tests. and looks like it works. I shoot them in my 6.8W and killed few hogs so far. Terminal results have been great with big wounds and total penetration

There is 160 partition data out there for 270 wsm. Could use as reference and assume it will take somewhat less powder. Use as a starting point and stop when velocity gets up to around 50-100 fps of 160 grain loads is what I would do

I would start with Noslers 270 WSM data for the 160 gr partition and work up from there. I saw where some had success with the 1 in 10 and those 165's too. Frontline Rejects YouTube was one of them. I went the 6.8 Western route and will be starting load development soon. Almost went with the fast twist 270 WSM. It's worth a try to see if you can stabilize them, if not someone will buy them off of you.

Don't waste your time shooting the 165 ABLR out of a 270 WSM unless it's a long action throated for 165s and fast twist.

For standard twist you could use a 140 berger, 145gr ELDX or 150gr Accubonds and absolutely flatten anything in North America at substantial distance.

I’m in SW Utah and we get long shots on Muleys and Elk. My 270 WSM 26” 1/10” MGM barrel has Berger 140 CH MV 3325 @ 1000 yards is just hitting 1800 fps, the 145 ELD-X leaves barrel @ 3250 FPS still going 2400 FPS @ 1000 yards. This is a Montana I bought in ‘03 and could never dial in cold bore shots to follow up shots so had MGM rebarrel it. If I were starting out today it would be a 6.8 Western no question for the type of hunting I do at 74 years young off tripod and glassing. Hells Bells, an ‘06 shooting 167 Scenars has plenty velocity left at 700+ yards to open up on game. Every couple years the mfgs present us with a new cartridge to keep their sales numbers up. I’m a gun nutt, ergo, I buy a rifle that intrigues me and the chambering is what it is. There’s about 1000 different cartridges that will do what needs doing. Pick one and run with it, be it a fiddly esoteric wildcat that consumes your life at the reloading bench or one that you keep fed with ammo from the local Ace hardware store.
