Anyone got any starting points for the Berger 170 and 270 win? I called Berger but they closed about 20 minutes ago. Oops.

If you’ve got any experience with this combo I’m curious what kind of results you got. I’ll be tinkering with it and will post results but hoping to get a few starting points if anyone wants to point in the right direction I appriciate it!

Going to start with RL26 and go from there but think that’s a decent place to start.

I created a thread on here if you search for it comparing the Berger 170 and Matrix 165 out of a 270win, don’t remember the velocity I was getting. But if you have a 1:10 barrel don’t waste your time as it will not stabilize and goes off the map after 300 yards.

If you have a 1:8 barrel email Berger as they will provide you a list of a number of different powders and starting points.

Cool I’ll check out your thread thanks! I emailed Berger and apparently they won’t email out data anymore? But I called them yesterday and got some good stuff. I was hoping to get some responses from forum members so I could tinker over the weekend.

I saw that Matrix also has a 175 gr have you played with that one too or just the 165?

From what I can tell depending on a couple variables I should be able to get about 2850-2900+. In the past Berger’s load data has been very conservative so I won’t be surprised if I can easily surpass the numbers they gave me but only one way to find out.

I have a bunch of the 175’s but haven’t played with them yet. I ended up going with the 165 in my 270win.

Nice! That’ll work just fine for me. I know you’ll have more pop in the WSM than me with the ol 270 win. Its a Lilja 26” 1/8 should be a shooter

Yeah that’ll work just fine, one thing to note, find my thread on the load development I did with my 270wsm. I found the 170 grouped best from 0.085 - 0.10 off the lands.

Regardless of caliber/cartridge and as with any new bullets you are trying for the first time, you simply start from the beginning recognizing that your rifle is its own separate individual from all other 270 Bees.

I have used the hunting VLDs for a few years now and still do in my 300 WSM with the same 1:10 twist. I eventually found the best powders, charges, seating depths etc for best accuracy for each VLD bullet weight I use,,,that work best in my rifle. You must do the same. No shortcuts.

If your reloading manuals don't specify any 170 gr VLDs but show other 170 gr bullet brands, then choose a powder or powders that you have already used and like and start reloading 4 to 5 grains less than published maximums. And increase as warranted from there by 1/2 grain until you notice pressure signs and/or accuracy decline.

One of the successful keys to VLD accuracy is finding the best "distance from the lands" sweet spots (COAL) for your individual rifle for each VLD that you use.

Reco VLD loadings that might come your way on this thread that work great in other 270 Bees, may not work so well in your rifle.

I sold mine and built a 280 AI for the better selection of bullets.

I had one of those , they’re sweet i just want something different so split the difference of the 280 AI and 6.5-06 AI, faster than the 280 and shoots a heavier bullet than the 6.5 so why not.

Bullets are so good anymore caliber matters less and less especially for someone like me that doesn’t shoot long long range. Yes, fewer bullets with high BCs to choose from but between the Berger 150-170s Nosler LRAB/AB 140-150s, Matrix 165-175, Barnes LRX 129 if I want to shoot a solid or Hornady 145 ELDX if that’s you’re thing I’ve got more choices than I should have to mess with unless the rifle just isn’t a shooter. Then I’ve got other problems lol

Don’t forget the Hammer 168 and Woodliegh has a 180.

Exactly! So many options. I haven’t tried the Hammer bullets yet but man oh man do I want to. Especially now that I have a fast twist barrel i can justify it lol
