I’ve got a Browning A-bolt II with a B.O.S.S and a Leupold VX ii 3x9x40 with the M1 turret. Bought the rifle from a buddy a decade or so ago and have always shot factory ammo out of it. She seems to like 180 grain SST’s, ELD-X’s, and Accubonds, I’m sure the rifle shoots better than I can if that makes sense. I recently took the rifle on a cow elk hunt and missed one at 300 yards. lost her in the scope on the first shot. Got back in the gun, sent another and that time saw snow fly on the hill right in front of her brisket. I had a less than ideal rest on a tree branch and I just totally shanked that second shot. first one prolly the same but didn’t spot the shot. Went and checked for blood where the elk were standing and found none. Looked all over the open slope they ran onto and found no Elk.

That missed opportunity got me thinking about doing some load development with this gun and spend more time behind it. I intend on replacing the glass with something of higher magnification and have toyed with maybe dropping the barreled action into a Bell and Carlson.

Anyhow, I got a wild hair the other day while at the store and left with a set of Hornady .300 Win Mag Dies, some Federal Magnum Rifle primers, and some 185 grain Berger VLD hunting bullets.

I have zero experience reloading but a buddy who reloads is going to help me get started and allow me to use his equipment. I just needed to buy the dies and reloading components. I have a lot of brass I’ve been saving over the years from factory loads also.

When I told him I bought the VLD hunting bullets he was kind of trying to talk me out of them. should I reconsider using these? I had some Sierra Game kings in the cart before these but decided on Berger. Accubonds were tempting but about $20 more than the Bergers and budget is an issue right now.

Anyone have good results with the VLD hunting loads? and what powder are you using? A quick search I did came back with H1000, Retumbo, and RL-22 as being popular options for 180 + grain .300 WM loads.

I can tell by the small amount of research I’ve done so far I’m going to tweak on this stuff pretty hard. I’m here to learn. Thank you for any insight.

I use that bullet in my 300 WSM and have killed a good amount of game with it. VLDH bullets seem to be picky on seating depth from my experience loading them in multiple cartridges.

That’s good to hear. I have read a few times now about seating depth being something that requires some trial and error with the VLDH’s.
