I'm going elk hunting in September and will be taking a .270 Winchester. I used to have a .300 WSM which I shot horribly and traded in for this .270. I feel that the reduced recoil (and the accuracy that goes with it for me) are worth what I gave up in knockdown power. What do you think?

According to my dad, (who is some what of a gun aficionado), .270 is what he gave me for elk. Now, I can't tell you from first hand experience that it works, cause well, I haven't shot an elk with it. But with the right loads and proper shot placement; it will take an elk.

Absolutely. The 270 is a great round that kills many animals every year. With a good bullet and staying within your limits you will be fine.

My son shot his bull using my wife's .270 at a measured 408 yards two years ago. He used factory Federal Premium ammo with 150 grain Nosler Partitions. Your .270 will definitely do the job if you do your part.
Good luck on your hunt.

270 hits harder than any of the nonmagnum 260/6.5 rounds, harder than 7-08 and 308, equals 30.06 and 280. Fine for elk, just don't holler, "its only a 270," before shooting. Mine favors 140 gr. bonded or partition bullets for elk, Easily effective to 400 yds, probably more but I don't take longer shots @ game.

We've taken I'm not sure how many elk with a 270. Always have shot 150 partitions out of it. They group great in my rifle. If you choose the right bullet then it'll kill an elk just as dead as a 30-06 given the same shot placement.

The top factory elk ammo for 270 are going to be the 150 grain partition, 140 grain accubond and the 130 grain barnes ttsx. There are others but those ones are proven killers. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry too much about killing a mature bull elk with a .270 Winchester. Just make sure you pick your shot and hit it well. Heck, I let guys shoot and kill mountain grizzlies with .270 Winchesters. It'll do fine on elk, as long as it's handled well.

I took my best bull with the 140gr Accubond from a 270 win. The 150gr Partition does an excellent job also. I'm sure other bullets like the Barnes, Interbond, Scirocco II, etc do also. Those are the two I have seen used in the field.

I bought a .270 when I was 12 years old. I am 37 now and it is the only high power rifle I have ever owned. 150 gr Barnes x groups great for me. I have shot over a dozen elk with it.

This is the exact load I'm taking. Good to know it will do the trick. Thanks.

Make sure you use a premium bullet like an accubond or partition and then make a good shot and you will have no problems with the .270

A 270 through the lungs is far more effective than a 300wsm through the guts. I was raised with the mantra of, the biggest round you can shoot effectively, sounds like the 270 fits that well for you. It will do the job just fine.
