ok so I currently have a tikka in 6.5 creed.......like most of you I like to waste all my money on my hunting rifle LOL

debating changing the tikka into a 6mm creed or 6mm arc

or just buying a 243

or just buying a 6mm arc made by howa

I would shoot ELDM's like everyone, looking for 1800fps out to 700 yrds, mostly deer, black beers, and some elk.

TBH furthest longest shot would most likely be 300 to 400....but 700 is a nice number to work up too

My 20” Tikka 8 twist 243 shoots factory 90 ELDX at 3030 average MV.

At 5,000 ft DA that gets me 1,800 FPS right at 700 yards.

what is your current velocity with your 6.5cm? Have you run the numbers in a ballistic app? It likely be a 6-700 yd gun at elevation with 140 or 147 eldms.

I had two 6.5 cm Tikkas (20 in and 24in). I TOO like to waste money and am easily influenced by ppl on the internet (plus my friends just changed their barrels and had all the tools) so I took the leap and swapped the 24 in 6.5cm with a 24 in 6cm prefit. With factory 6cm available at my lgs (I don't reload) it was something I wanted to try. Definitely prefer the 6cm more as the less recoil really helps with spotting impacts and I think it gives me another 200 yds, but 6.5 cm still will likely do what you want.

I guess I should clarify, the main purpose would be less recoil. I have a 7.62x39 bolt gun that is a dream to shoot, and its light....it just lacks range of course

when I was shooting 140gr around 2700fps I think

Then I went to 123gr and 100 gr and it is around the 3000fps mark

I would just like a super light recoiling rifle...why can't I have it all!! lol

then just yolo and rebarrel to a 6cm prefit and shoot 108 eldms. if you want threaded 5/8 for suppressor and still pretty light for hunting you can get the Tikka hybrid lite contour from preferred (or McGowan can do it for you too as a custom contour) for a pretty reasonable price. I think you can even send your barreled action in if you don't want to deal with taking off the barrel for a fee. x caliber also pretty reasonable but they use a barrel nut

I don't think the 6 ARC will get you there unless you handload and use high pressure loads. The 6 ARC will get you to 600 with 1800 but 700 is pushing it. I love mine but have accepted it is a 500 yard gun.

It is hard to differentiate the recoil between the 243 and 6CM when all things are equal. I shoot both cartridges and have a fast twist 243. Again, unless you handload the 6CM is a better choice due to heavy bullets loaded in factory ammo. If you handload, the easiest and cheapest way is to buy a new 243 Winchester 8 twist take off barrel and swap out your 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Those factory 243 barrels typically shoot the 108 ELDM to around 2900 fps with a load of 42 grains of H4350.

I’d get a Howa 6 ARC and a Tikka 6.5 Creedmoor.

The Howa with 108 ELDMs will get you to 600 yards and will have considerably less recoil than the other options. The Tikka 6.5 Creedmoor can be your 700 yard gun.

I’ve found with the scope on 8-10x past 600, it’s relatively easy to spot shots with 6.5 Creedmoor cause time of flight. You will have a wider FOV in the scope at lower power and with good form, can see what happens. Also there is less perceptible reticle movement on 8-10x at 700 yards so you will be more confident to go ahead and shoot.

6ARC and Howa mini are puzzle pieces for each other. Especially with a 16” barrel. It’s just a different gun.

You may lose out on what you need at 5-700 yards. But you will improve a lot from 0-300.

My wife’s mini in .223 and a stockys vg is the first gun I wish I had when I was 10. Both of my kids will have minis ready to go when they’re old enough to shoot.

As for the 5-700 - what you have, the 243 fast twist, and 6 creed all do it.

If it were me I’d do everything I could with the 6.5 as is, and accept the range, and spend the dough on a 6ARC mini.

do you notice much diference in recoil between the 243 and 6 creed?
In my 8.5 lb guns with Rokstoks, if I shot both back to back I’d have a hard time telling which gun was which.

On paper the 6 creed shooting the 103s and 108s does have just a touch more free recoil energy.

I run the 22” sporter barrel Howa Mini and it’s a legit 500 yard rifle. Here is a doe in the scope I dropped on the spot at 501 yards with the 108 ELDM at 2650 FPS.

Easy to spot hits in a light weight hunting rifle.

I recently went through this debate myself and landed on the 6arc Howa. I've been shooting a Tikka 270win as my main hunting rifle for the last several years. I've pretty much been a 300 yard hunter, but would like to get to 500-600 so having something I could practice with a lot was important. I'm in CO, so .223 isn't an option if I want to hunt with my practice gun. The cost of ammo, recoil, and barrel life also were pros for the 6arc over 243 and 6cm.
