243 bullet for youth deer

Thanks guys. To clarify, we have recovered all but one. All but one of the shots were in the vitals but no DRT shots and very little blood if at all. It’s a challenge with a 6 year old when you aren’t sure exactly where the crosshairs were when the shot broke and you watched a deer run off in the woods. But he’s says “I know I was on him.”

A couple of the deer we have found shot through the lungs 80-100 yards away with basically no blood. The one that really hurt was a very nice buck that he undoubtedly hit but we found no blood. A couple weeks later the neighbors son killed it and we found that my son had hit it through ribs just below the heart. There was obvious trauma to the lower part of the heart but he lived. I know things happen but I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if we were shooting a more frangible bullet like a NBT or SST.

Basically I’m looking for more DRT and celebrations and less “let’s give it a hour and go see if we can find some blood.” That’s tough for anyone, let alone a 6 year old.

80 grain Remington core lokt yes I know what ya more considered a varmint bullet but the fall in their tracks 125 yards quartering away hit right side shoulder went out left side neck very deadly it was drt yes shot has alot to do with it but, I had shot 2 does with the 95 SST one I know was a definite hit 3 drops of blood no deer the other one no blood. I will be sticking with the 80 grain core lokts.

I know this is from a few years ago but as an update, I switched to handloading 95gr NBT for the 243 and our results have been far better. Blood trails are short and heavy generally speaking.

That's good show us what u got.

Just a bunch of pictures of kids with does and 90” whitetails. They are getting a little olderwith more experience so we are all a little more confident at the moment of truth. We’ve had a 100% recovery rate on well over 25 whitetail for my boys and other kids a take. I’m very happy with the 95 NBT and am strongly considering loading them for my 1:8 .243 once I shoot out my 108eldm loads.

@CBB1 just bought a 243 and am looking at a few different cartridges that use the 95 grain nbt. I don’t hand load. What is it about hand loading the 95 nbt that made it more effective for you? Trying to determine if I need to get custom ammo loaded or if factory will suffice… thanks for the insight.

Nosler BT bullets are great for deer. They have very rapid expansion.

I recently bought some of the 95g .243 bullets to test in my 6 ARC. Accuracy was stellar. I cannot wait to try it on game. My experience on deer with a 6.5CM was very good.

In terms of factory ammo, Nosler is very proud of their ammo and it is priced higher than Hornady Eldx/Eldm ammunition. I tried the 243 and 280AI loads. Both were accurate.

Both my kids shot deer with 90gr Hornady ELDX. Both dropped where they stood.

My son neck shot his and had minimal meat damage.

My daughter clipped some bone and we lost a little meat but NBD.
