22lr bolt gun accuracy

less than $400 all in.

my Savage mk-II, FS-SR. vortex scope and a boyd stock.

the CZ is nice and fits the budget, but isnt that just the rifle? add a scope and it gets higher. i was 100% hitting shards of clay pigeons set on a hillside at 112 yards. my rifle punches WAY ABOVE it's weight class with CCI standard Velocities.

I will throw out the Henry “evil Roy” silver boy. There is something about a lever action that is fun to shoot. I bought it for my son and we both have fun with it but can’t speak for accuracy much as we haven’t done more than shoot at a pop can at 50 yards with it.

I’ve had extraction/ejection issues with a savage fvsr and cci standard velocity and subs. Savage told me to either try different ammo or ship it back to them. Polishing the chamber each time I clean it is starting to help. I can almost make it through a 50rnd box without it hanging up now. It’s quieter than my boys red Ryder with cci sub hp’s and a suppressor and shoots under dime sized groups at 50. I’ll have a CZ next.

Google up a pic of what a MKII looks like out of the stock before purchasing. Compare that to Ruger American, Keystone 722, CZ or even Savage's new B22.

I've got a b22fv. Will put a lot of ammo into a ragged hole at 50 and is damn fun to shoot at 100+. I haven't shot it for group at that range, only rocks/clay pigeons/etc. Always does the job if I do my part.

Mine behaves properly. My brothers never acts up ever. Not even once. He got a good one.

Mine, it’s rare but it’s happens occasionally. I got savage to send me free parts. I did take my bolt apart and cleaned the crap out of all the parts. I keep the parts as spares.

My rifle is stupid accurate. I bought mine with the thinking that I wouldn’t love shooting rimfire that’s much. Big effen surprise that it didn’t leap to the front of the pack ass my favorite all time caliber to shoot regularly. I guess I just remember being a kid, and being impatient about jumping up out of the kid caliber.

Now? I’m shopping for a clean CZ452 American. I’ll be patient. I bought my Savage solely just to try my hand at shooting sooty grouse like Rinella. I didn’t think I would want more.

I can’t see how some of you all are recommending the rifles to the OP knowing his budget.

Glad to hear all these good reports with the CZ. Just bought a 455 less than a week ago and can't wait to start plinking with it.

Ruger 77/22 is about as nice of bolt .22 as you could buy. You might be able to find one used in that price range.
The OP said pretty accurate. I have a Ruger American in .22 LR and another in .17HMR, both have Nikon BDC rimfire 3x9 scopes and both are accurate. I have a couple of friends with 77/22's and the Americans will outshoot either of them.

Another nod to the CZ 455. I've had the 'Military Trainer' for two years now. Feeds smooth and shoots well. The balance on the rifle and clarity of the sights make it a joy to shoot.Today I was clanging an 8" steel plate at 115 yds offhand with it without much trouble. I'll probably get a scope for it at some point to wring out the accuracy.

I've won some CMP rimfire Sporter matches with a bone-stock Savage MK ii. I even kept the chincy no-name scope and the Tupperware stock. The short bull barrel makes it well balanced and handy so it's also a great squirrel gun. One day I might upgrade the rings and maybe the scope.

One of my best friends has a CZ bolt action rifle, so I've had a lot of opportunity to compare the two side by side. The CZ is a beautifully made gun and doesn't have the cheap creaky feeling of the Savage, but the Savage is just as accurate as the CZ.

As others have said, 22lr ammunition is as important to your accuracy as the actual 22 caliber rifle itself. If I had to subjectively rank common ammunition it would go something like CCI>Winchester>Federal>Remington.

If you want to squeeze even more accuracy out of your 22lr, get a rim thickness gauge. Rimfire ammunition indexes from, well, the rim. This means varying rim thickness will produce varying headspace. You can sort a brick of ammunition by rim thickness and then get some really great groups when you zero and shoot all within the same thickness. One of the things that sets high quality ammunition (like CCI) apart from low quality stuff (Remington golden bullets) is consistent rim thickness.

Have had a chance to check out a couple mk2s, and a cz455. Also looked at a couple ruger Americans in 22lr. Looks like the mk2 is a pretty good deal, liked the cz and the ruger better though. Probably just end up watching for a deal on one of these three.

Picked up a Ruger American a month or so ago, and accuracy is excellent as is price.

What about heavy vs standard barrel? Looked at a cz455 American synthetic stock, and really liked the fit, feel, and balance with the standard barrel. In a 22lr what advantage is a heavy barrel?

I have a couple of CZ 452s (Varmint and FS). When I do my part, use good ammo, and have little wind, I can shoot five shot groups of an inch or less at 100 yards pretty consistently. For me, and with a 22, that is much more difficult than shooting 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards. In a no wind day, one of my friends hit three clay pigeons in a row at 300 yards with the 452 Varmint. I have recently seen some new 452 Americans for sale.

My brother has a Savage MKII TR and it shoots well, too.
