Looking to pick up a couple 22lr rifles for me and my son to play with. What we want to do is use them for cheaper shooting practice, and would like to get something pretty accurate. Probably looking in the 3-400 dollar range and then add scope. Really not set on a bolt gun, maybe a modded 10/22?

Any recommendations?

Ruger 77/22 is about as nice of bolt .22 as you could buy. You might be able to find one used in that price range.

+1 on 77/22. Best I’ve had, clay pigeons at 100 is fun with it. I have heard good things about cz also, I just don’t like the magazine sticking down as they used to.

Save some coin and get a savage mkII in whatever flavor you want. With eley and wolf mt I get dime size groups at 50yds.

My mkII is my frontcountry buck (rabbit) slaying long range rig.

I've had a 77/22, Remington 521, a Kimber 22, a Savage, and a CZ 452...all of them shoot better than I do.

CZ or Savage is likely the best bang for buck.

CZ 452 or 455. I bought a 455 and love that gun and it's a tack driver! 1/2-1" 5-shot groups at 50 yards with 3 different ammo types at random! I put a 2-7x Leupold rim-fire scope on it. Really like that scope as well for a 22.

Cz or savage.

10/22 if you want to accessorize but they are not as inherently accurate.

Spend a little on ammo. Cheap 22lr is notoriously inconsistent in powder charges which leads to inaccuracy. If you run Walmart grade bricks in any gun you’ll have consistency issues.

Another vote for the CZ, I have a 452 which I don't think they make anymore. Standard CCI with suppressor it is amazing fun and accurate

Cz 455 is the current model. They make it in a bunch of configurations and they have a good reputation for accuracy. Mine isn’t a head turner with most ammo but if I shoot premium stuff (it likes rws target rifle) plinking at golf balls at 100-200 yards is reasonable and clay pigeons are mindless.

If you get one you might look at getting a scope base with some elevation built in—many scopes don’t have enough elevation in the dial to shoot accurately out to 200 yds and beyond, and the guns are plenty capable of it. Area 419 makes the nicest one for cz.

Im also on the CZ or Savage boat in that price range.
.22s are generally pretty accurate little guns(target or not), and in the end it usually comes down to what you wanna spend in your quest to feed it. Much like the fairer sex... Some are happy with hotdogs and a campfire -some are fine dining or nothing;)

Joining the CZ dogpile. My 452 is amazing. I have not owned a 455, but a close friend has the varmint model and easily stays with me at shoots.

I laid-away a 10/22 Target with the nice laminate stock, and nice spiral fluted barrel. Im gonna go get it later this week and I’m hoping for 1/2” at 50 with premium ammo.

Ruger American or Keystone 722 for bolt, T/C T/CR22 for autoloader

Tikka has a 22lr now, but that's a little over budget.

If you're going to shoot past fifty yards, get a scope with an adjustable objective or use a centerfire scope. A consistent cheek weld overcomes parallax error at short range, but a close focus rimfire scope lacks clarity at distance.

Look at the 17hmr. It does everything that 22lr does only better. I have a savage 17hmr with bull barrel and it’s the most accurate rifle I’ve over shot. Dime sized groups at 100yds without even trying with hornady ammo. Only downside is slightly more expensive ammo but it’s a bolt gun so not firing a ton and still relatively inexpensive.

I have four tricked out Ruger 10/22's that shoot great. But I bought a Ruger American bolt gun as a trainer for my grandson, swapped out the trigger with a Timney and with descent to good ammo it is tack killer.

I'm surprised nobody has a Marlin. I've got a model 925, an updated version of the old Marlin 25. Gun is light, very accurate, and affordable. Only thing I'd like to change would be to lighten up the trigger a bit.

sounding like they all shoot pretty good these days. The price of the mk2 makes it interesting, maybe this week we will go check some out. I am thinking that I would prefer something with similar weight and feel to a centerfire rifle, doesn't look like the mk2 would be that, but will have to check one out. The cz455 looks interesting, probably what I am looking for. I already have a stock 10/22 carbine, never shot it past 25 yrds, but would end up spending a fair bit to make it the way I want, so might as well buy another gun.
