Why the two different calibers out of curiosity?

Was hunting with my brother who had the 300 (as I always used to as well). Neither of us cared who got it as long as it went down hence the multiple shots. He didn't react to either shot really, he just took a few steps and dropped dead a few seconds after the shots. The 300 was not suppressed.

Here is a quick bit and I actually took pictures this time. My 9 year old nephew got this guy at 88 yards with the 223 TMK AAC ammo. High Center to the shoulder, left a solid 1" hole through the on side ribs, went above the heart but shredded both lungs, took out the bottom half of the spine, out the dark ribs (slightly further back than entrance), and stopped at the edge of the far side of the muscle in the back hal of the shoulder.

In summary, bang - flop. This is his 3rd hog!

After reading through this entire thread, I purchased a Tikka .223 with a 16” barrel from Eurooptic this summer. I put a leupold vx3 4-14 scope on it with extra low Talley rings. I purchased some 77 TMK ammo from Bonefrog ammunition. I’m getting 2695fps consistently, had Leupold make a turret, this a really fun rifle to shoot and pack around the mountain. I shot this spike elk here in Utah on 10/4/25. Shot was 60yds in some thick pines, I pulled the offhand shot and hit him too far back. He stood there for a second and walked
off in the pines. No blood trail, I followed his tracks, he bedded down 100yds later. I snuck in and shot him in the neck. Just shows that good shots matter with every caliber. I just pulled this shot left, no excuses. My first animal with this rifle. My son has a mule deer hunt coming up, looking forward to seeing it in action again soon.

I’m not sure the above post was related to me, but I read every page and understood the info previously posted on all 580 pages. I had a brain tumor and surgery two years ago at age 38. I have been fairly recoil sensitive since the surgery. This set up is perfect for my hunting needs, very thankful for an accurate, light recoiling rifle.
